Your Salzburg stay starts in the heart of the old town at Old MarketThe traditional square with Café Tomaselli, old house facades, and a view of Goldgasse is the ideal entrance. The tour continues through the world-famous Getreidegasse, lined with wrought iron guild signs and narrow passageways.
In the middle of the alley stands the Mozart's birthplace – the museum provides exciting insights into Mozart’s childhood, with original instruments and many personal objects.
Lunch break
For a relaxing break, there are cafés or inns in Goldgasse, at the Alter Markt or around Residenzplatz.
Afternoon: Cathedral, Cathedral Quarter & Church Diversity
Freshly strengthened, we head to the impressive Salzburg CathedralThe baroque church building with its magnificent dome, baptistery and ornate altars is one of the most important religious buildings in Austria.
Directly connected is the DomQuartier SalzburgThe 1.5-2 hour tour through state rooms, art collections and church galleries culminates in a special highlight: the view from above into the interior of the cathedral.
Afterwards, you can take a detour to the nearby collegiate church Salzburg's University Church – simple but impressive with its high dome. Just a few steps further, the Franciscan Church of Our Lady – with a Romanesque crypt, Gothic high choir and Baroque furnishings, it is one of the most exciting churches in the city.
Finish the tour at Mozartplatz with Mozart monument – the famous Mozart fountain is also located here.
Evening: Hohensalzburg Fortress & Dinner with a View
In the evening it is worth taking the drive up to Hohensalzburg Fortress – either by funicular or on foot. At the top, you'll be treated to a fantastic panoramic view over the city's rooftops, especially at sunset.
Day 2 – Castle, Mozart's adult life & evening atmosphere on the Salzach
Morning: Mirabell Palace & Mirabell Gardens
Start your second day on the right bank of the Salzach at Mirabell Palace with Mirabell GardensThe artistically landscaped garden with a view of the fortress is particularly pleasant to explore in the morning.
Tip: The “Park Café Mirabell” directly by the garden is perfect for a late breakfast or a coffee break.
Lunch: Mozart's Residence & New Residence (tip)
After the walk you will visit the Mozart Residence at Makartplatz. Here you can learn more about his later life, his family, and his travels – with multimedia support and original exhibits.
Afternoon: St. Peter's Abbey & Old Town Hall (photo stop)
We continue to the historical Stift St. Peter – a spiritual place with ancient walls, the famous cemetery and a picturesque passageway.
Before you go into the evening, it is worth taking a short photo stop at the Old Town Hall on Waagplatz. The interior is not open to visitors, but the narrow alley and the facade make for a good photo opportunity.
Evening: Walk along the Salzach & Marko Feingold Bridge
When the light becomes softer, we recommend a walk along the banks of the Salzach. Especially from Marko-Feingold-Steg From here you have a wonderful view of the old town, with the fortress in the background.
👉 Dinner tip: In the nearby Linzer Gasse you will find many nice restaurants with gardens – ideal for an outdoor dinner.
Day 3 – Modern views, interactive experiences & optional excursions
Morning: Museum of Modern Art (because of the view)
To be honest: The exhibition in Museum of Modern Art Salzburg It's a matter of taste. We weren't particularly impressed by it – but the view from the terrace over the old town is spectacular. You can easily reach it by taking the Mönchsberg elevator or via a walking path.
Noon: House of Nature
In case of bad weather – or simply if you feel like something interactive – this is House of nature Salzburg ideal. Here you'll find natural history, technology, space travel, dinosaurs, and a large aquarium – for all ages.
