The rear Gosau lake
To get to the rear Gosau lake, you first have to pass the front Gosau lake. The Hintere Gosausee lies at 1154 m above sea level. A. A forest road that is closed to public traffic leads to the lake. The lake in the Salzkammergut is located around 8 km south of the center of Gosau at the head of the Gosau valley.
The approximately circular lake has a maximum length of 800 m and a maximum width of 600 m and the surface is about 31 hectares. Its rock basin represents a tongue basin carved out by the glacier. On the southwest side, massive cones of rubble run down from the Gosaukamm to the lake. The lake is fed on the one hand from underground tributaries, which are influenced by both the Great Gosau Glacier and the Hallstatt Glacier, among other things.
At the southern end of the lake there is the Hohe Holzmeisteralm (1164 m above sea level), which is open in summer, and a hunting lodge. Since the Hintere Gosau Lake occasionally reaches temperatures of just over 20 ° C in summer, it is also occasionally used for swimming purposes.
