Altausseer Seerundweg: A picturesque walk around the lake
The Altausseer Seerundweg is one of the most beautiful circular hiking trails in Styria. On the approximately 7.5 km long, easy-to-walk trail, visitors can enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the crystal-clear lake and the surrounding mountain peaks of the Totes Gebirge. The well-developed trail leads directly along the shore and offers numerous rest areas from which the panorama can be experienced even more intensively. The Altausseer Seerundweg is ideal for families, leisurely walks or relaxed hikes in the middle of nature.
Altaussee is the only settlement on the shore of the lake of the same name, which is surrounded by mountain slopes. Lake Altausseer from the Loser, which can be crowded when the weather is nice.

The Altausseer Seerundweg is around 7.5km long, is stroller-friendly and very easy to manage. It is also probably one of the most beautiful lakeside paths in Austria, as you walk right next to the shore the entire time you walk.
We park at the “Parkplatz See” (lake parking lot), which is very easy to get to. You can just enter it into Google Maps. Half an hour costs 50 cents, 4 hours 4€, and a day ticket 8€. There are no other options, at least not with a debit card. You do have to be lucky and get there early, though, as the parking lot is small and fills up quickly.
We choose route 1a anti-clockwise along the Lake Altausseer You can't miss it, there are hardly any branches. You just stay on the bank. After a few minutes you can see Altaussee to his left, above which sits the LoserBy the way, we visited the lake once in summer and once in autumn. No matter what time of year, it is always beautiful.
The landscape is simply breathtaking. There is always a lake on the left and a beautiful forest on the right. Then there is the vertical Trisselwand (1754 m).
We walk for a little over an hour, pushing the stroller in front of us, until we reach the opposite side of the lake. There is now the only turnoff. You can either continue to the right along the lake shore (towards the jetty) or straight further back through the forest. Without knowing it, we take the slightly longer path through the forest (but the path along the shore is actually nicer). But don't worry, after a few minutes you will come to the turnoff towards the lake and the "Jagdhaus Seewiese”We follow this and inevitably come back to the riverside path (it's not really possible to get lost as the steep cliffs are to your right).
The Hunting Lodge
We return to the hunting lodge We order a fresh char and an apple and blueberry strudel for dessert. While we wait for the food, I take photos of the beautiful riverside path that we first passed by.
The food in the hunting lodge is great, we have rarely eaten such a good char. At €21.90 it is not exactly cheap, but it is probably one of the best fish we have ever eaten.
The picture-book snack station is often overcrowded, so it helps to make a reservation. But the guests don’t just come here because of the good food. The fact that the “Jagdhaus Seewiese” opened in 2015 probably plays a role. James Bond film “Spectre” also played a role.
If that is not enough for you: just 100 meters away there is a ferry station. So you don’t even have to walk here, but can also reach the hut as part of a Tour on Lake Altausseer We probably only got a table because the ferry didn't dock until exactly 10 minutes after we arrived.
The view of the lake invites you to linger. We continue towards AltausseeThis side of the shore is also beautiful. The water is crystal clear and green like an emerald. There are always nice little bays that invite you to swim, and small snack stations are also set up near Altaussee more often.
Finally, we arrive in the cute little town. The wooden facades of the houses are elaborately decorated, the flower boxes are lovingly tended. Unfortunately, we don't have much time to explore the town, as our parking ticket is about to expire.
It takes around 1.5 hours to walk around the lake, pure walking time of course, without stopping. But who wants that? We keep stopping to take photos and treat ourselves to a fantastic lunch in an incredible setting. In total, we are on the road for over 3.5 hours. After all, we are on holiday, so don't let it stress you out.
