Altaussee, located in the Styrian Salzkammergut, is a historic health resort that not only impresses with its beautiful location on the lake of the same name, but also with its healthy climate. Surrounded by mountains, the town offers peace and relaxation, while its centuries-old history and the nearby Loser provide cultural and sporting experiences.
Altaussee lies at the foot of the Losers and has made a name for itself as a health resort, especially since it was recognized as a health resort in 1989. In the graduation and Kneipp facility, visitors can enjoy the beneficial brine of the Altaussee salt mountain and experience the healthy air and the special healing powers of the place.
The town has a long history of settlement, dating back to 200 to 400 AD. Salt mining played a crucial role in this. In the 19th century, however, the region increasingly became a popular holiday destination, and tourism became one of the most important economic sectors.
Today, Altaussee has around 1,818 inhabitants, including prominent personalities such as the actors Klaus Maria Brandauer and Hannes Androsch. The oldest building in the town is the Altaussee parish church, which was first mentioned in the general land register of the Duchy of Styria under Albrecht I (1280–1295). Its patron saint suggests that it was built in the 12th century.
One of the town's biggest attractions is the Altausseer Kirtag, which takes place every year on the first weekend in September. With around 20,000 guests over three days, the associated beer tent is one of the largest tent festivals in Austria. Around 600 barrels of beer are consumed here during the festival - a real highlight for locals and visitors alike.
In addition to its historical significance and cultural highlights, Altaussee offers an excellent starting point for hikes and explorations of the Loser. This striking mountain is a popular destination for hikers and winter sports enthusiasts and offers a wonderful view over the Ausseerland and the Lake Altausseer
