Tierwelt Herberstein: An animal adventure in Styria

The Tierwelt Herberstein is a popular tourist destination in Styria and offers fascinating insights into the world of over 700 animals from five continents. Here, on around 45 hectares, visitors can not only marvel at exotic animals such as lions, zebras and kangaroos, but also experience native species up close. The extensive facility impresses with its natural design and invites the whole family to an exciting day.

Short info:

  • What is the Herberstein Zoo? The animal world covers an area of 23 hectares with about 85 animal species.
  • Where is the Herberstein Animal World? The Herberstein Animal World near Herberstein Castle is a zoo in the municipality of Stubenberg in Styria. It is located not far from Stubenbergsee.
  • When is the park open? Here you can find the opening hours and admission prices.

Keeping wild animals has a long tradition in Herberstein and can be traced back to the 17th century, when fallow deer were first kept in Austria. Towards the end of the 1960s, Herberstein was converted into a zoo, where visitors can see animals from all five continents.

The enclosures are extremely spacious. At first we even had the feeling that they were too big, as we only ever saw the animals from a distance, but that was soon to change.

From the brown bear we first get breathtaking impressions. The bear's area is extensive, there is even a stream with a waterfall running through it. You almost feel like you are in the middle of nature. We stay here for a good 20 minutes, at the end the bear even goes for a swim in the pond.

We continue the round and pass Bison, camels, peacocks, pelicans, alpacas, a puma and many more. Each animal has plenty of space with enough places to retreat to. Prairie dogs can be seen all over the park.

Finally you reach the monkeys and lions, although the latter are currently sleeping. A highlight is the cheetah enclosure, by the way, the largest in EuropeIn 1978, a so-called prey simulator (comparable to a drag lift) was installed here for the first time in the world to feed the cheetahs.

The animals seem to feel very comfortable here, rolling around in the sun that is finally coming out. Near the entrance there is also a petting zoo for children.

For us, this zoo is one of the most beautiful we have ever visited. You should definitely plan at least 4 hours if you want to discover everything.

By the way: anyone who stays more than 3 nights in the area will receive a "GenussCardWith this you get a 20% discount when you visit.
