Lake Astbergsee, above Going, is one of the most famous viewpoints in the Kitzbühel Alps. On windless days, the Kaiser Mountains are reflected almost perfectly in the calm water, which is why the lake is often called the "Emperor's Mirror." Originally created as a reservoir, it is now an easily accessible destination with a breathtaking panorama. The short circular path, the numerous photo opportunities, and the proximity to the cable car make it particularly popular with families and leisurely hikers.
Lake Astberg lies nestled between the gentle grassy slopes of the Kitzbühel Alps and the striking limestone massif of the Wilder Kaiser mountain range. This contrast creates an extraordinary landscape that makes the lake one of the most photographed spots in the region. A well-maintained walking path with benches and wooden loungers, strategically placed to offer panoramic views, encircles the shore. Despite its function as a reservoir, the area has a tranquil and natural feel.
With the Astbergbahn You can easily reach the Astberg from Going. From the mountain station, it's just a few steps to the lake. Right next to it is the so-called Kaiserkino (Emperor's Cinema) with wooden loungers and an unobstructed view of the Kaiser Mountains.
A popular hiking route leads from Going via the Hollenauer Kreuz up to the Astbergsee lake. The path crosses alpine meadows, offers continuous views of the Kaiser Mountains, and is technically easy. A shorter alternative is the ascent from the Brenneralm, from where the lake can be reached in just a few minutes. Experienced hikers can also incorporate the Astberg into longer tours towards Ellmau and then return by bus.
In summer, Lake Astberg is a versatile destination for all age groups. Right next to the lake is the... Astberg Pony Alm, where children can take guided pony rides. That Kaiserkino and several photo spots invite you to linger, especially at sunset.
The circular path around the lake is easily manageable with a stroller. From here, further hiking trails lead to the Blattlalm or the Brenneralm. Mountain biking is permitted on the designated trails. On warm days, those who dare can swim in the lake and enjoy the panoramic views directly from the water.
In winter, the Astbergsee lake lies in the middle of the ski area of the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental and again serves as a reservoir for snowmaking. Direct access is then only possible with skis or a toboggan.
The toboggan run from the Astberg mountain down to the valley is particularly popular and is one of the longest in the region. Winter hiking trails and snowshoe routes also lead around the Astberg, but weather and snow conditions should always be taken into account. The area is easily accessible when the ski lifts are running, but considerably quieter when they are not.
Located right by the lake is the Blattlalm, offering classic Tyrolean cuisine and a terrace. Other working alpine pastures, such as the Brenneralm and the Hollenauer Kreuz, are in the immediate vicinity. Parking is available at the Astbergbahn valley station, and the cable car is also suitable for families with strollers.
