permanent exhibition on Austrian literary history

The museum is spread over three floors and presents a variety of exhibitions. first and second floors is the permanent exhibition, which examines the development of Austrian literature since the late 18th century. Here, visitors can discover works by great writers such as Johann Nestroy, Franz Kafka, Ilse Aichinger, Ingeborg Bachmann, Thomas Bernhard and Friederike Mayröcker. The objects on display are also particularly noteworthy, such as Peter Handke's walking stick or a uniform that corresponds to "Lieutenant Gustl" from Arthur Schnitzler's work of the same name.

Franz Grillparzer's study

In the second floor Franz Grillparzer's study, which has been preserved in its original state, can also be seen. This room offers fascinating insights into the everyday working life of the famous Austrian dramatist. Franz Kafka quotes Grillparzer as follows: "Grillparzer has proven that you can suffer a lot in Vienna," Kafka wrote to his friend Grete Bloch in 1914.

Changing special exhibitions

The third floor The museum is dedicated to changing special exhibitions. During our visit there was a tribute to Ingeborg Bachmann, one of the most important writers of the 20th century. These exhibitions regularly offer new perspectives and insights into the life and work of important writers.
