The Maria Taferl Basilica rises 443 meters above sea level above the Danube Valley in Lower Austria and is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the country. With its Baroque architecture, ornate furnishings, and spiritual history, it attracts up to 300,000 pilgrims and visitors annually. The view from the basilica extends far across the Danube Valley to the Alps.
The pilgrimage to Maria Taferl began in the 17th century with reports of miraculous healings at an oak tree with an image of the Virgin Mary. According to an expert opinion from the church, the foundation stone for the present church was laid in 1660. Construction began under the direction of Georg Gerstenbrandt, later continued by Carlo Lurago, and finally completed by Jakob Prandtauer. The church was consecrated in 1724.
The basilica is a significant example of Baroque church architecture. The interior frescoes are by Antonio Beduzzi and depict scenes from the lives of Mary and Jesus. The high altar houses a Pietà, venerated as an image of grace. The organ was built by Johann Hencke and later expanded.
Maria Taferl quickly developed into an important place of pilgrimage. In 1760, over 700 processions were recorded here, and more than 19,000 services were held. The basilica's treasury displays numerous votive offerings from pilgrims.
The Treasury of the Maria Taferl Basilica is a room in the popular Baroque style, decorated with frescoes depicting the origins of the pilgrimage and miraculous healings. Votive offerings, liturgical vestments, and other religious artifacts are kept here, reflecting the personal stories and gratitude of the faithful. The exhibition "Built, Valued, Loved" consists of two parts: one in the basilica's treasury and one in the rectory cellar.
Note: The treasury is located inside the church, but the entrance is outside at the back. Entrance fee is 3€, free with the NÖ-Card.
The treasury is 1 April to 31 October 2025 open daily:
The basilica's crypt is located in the basement and is a place of silence and contemplation. Here, visitors can linger and say their personal prayers in a simple yet atmospheric space. Access to the crypt is via the rear of the basilica.
In 2024, the Maria Taferl Basilica took second place in the ORF program "9 Places – 9 Treasures," underscoring the site's tourist significance. Cultural events, concerts, and pilgrimages take place regularly.
