The Wackelsteine

The wobbling stones are the heart of the Blockheide Nature Park. These impressive granite formations were created by weathering and appear to balance on their bases. The St. Christopher's Stone, the Devil's Bed and the Goblin Stones are particularly well-known. These natural monuments are not only geologically interesting, but are also surrounded by myths and legends.

The 30-meter-high observation tower offers a fantastic panoramic view of the region up to Gmünd and further. The tower also houses an exhibition on the geological development of the Bohemian Massif, which focuses on the “birth of the rocking stones”. Climbing the 108 steps is worthwhile, as the view of the granite landscapes is breathtaking. Entrance costs 3€, with the NÖ-Card it is free.

Several themed hiking trails lead through the park, including the Ladybird Trail and the Meridian Trail. These trails are well signposted and offer exciting information about the local flora and fauna. Along the trails you can discover rare plants such as marsh tea and typical moor plants such as sundew.

Right next to the observation tower is the Blockheide shelter, which offers a rich menu and homemade pastries. For children, there is a natural playground with a stone labyrinth that invites them to play and explore.

Practical Tips

Dogs are allowed on a leash. The park can be visited at any time of year, but is particularly beautiful in spring and autumn when nature is in full bloom or the leaves are changing color.
