The Graben: Vienna's historic boulevard

The Graben is one of the most famous and historic streets in Vienna. It dates back to Roman times, when it was part of the Roman city wall. In the Middle Ages it developed into an important trade route and over the centuries was transformed into the elegant promenade that we know today. This mixture of history, magnificent architecture and luxury shopping makes the street one of the central attractions in Vienna.

Short info:

  • Where is it: Graben, 1010 Vienna
  • Length of the street: About 500 meters
  • Special feature: Historical monuments, luxury shops, baroque fountains
  • Accessibility: subway lines U1 and U3 (Stephansplatz)

Historical Significance and Sights

The Graben was originally a moat outside the city walls of Vienna, which was later filled in and converted into a wide street. This historical development is reflected in the buildings and monuments that line the Graben.

The Plague Column

A central landmark is the imposing plague column, which was built in the late 17th century. This baroque column was donated by Emperor Leopold I to celebrate the end of the plague epidemic that had hit Vienna hard in 1679. The Plague Column features elaborate sculptures and allegorical representations that symbolize the victory of faith over the plague. It is considered one of the most important baroque monuments in Vienna and attracts numerous visitors every day.

Historic fountains

At the beginning and end of the moat there are two baroque fountains, the Josefsbrunnen and the Leopoldsbrunnen, which were also built in the 17th century. They contribute to the artistic design of the Graben and are reminiscent of Vienna's baroque heyday.

shops and shopping opportunities

The Graben is known for its luxury shops and elegant boutiques. Many of the world's leading brands can be found here:

  • Louis Vuitton
  • Cartier
  • Hermes
  • Juwelier Wagner
  • Swarovski
  • Montblanc
  • Max Mara

These exclusive stores offer a luxurious shopping experience and make Graben one of the best addresses for upscale shopping in Vienna.

cafes and restaurants

The Graben also has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine. Visitors can relax in first-class cafés and restaurants:

  • Julius Meinl am Graben: A supermarket famous for its delicatessen and elegant café.
  • Café de l'Europe: A classic Viennese café that is ideal for a coffee break.
  • Segafredo: An Italian cafe known for high-quality espresso.
  • Wiener Stadtbräu: A restaurant offering Viennese cuisine and regional specialties.

Christmas lights

Especially at Christmas time, the Graben is transformed into a sea of lights. The magnificent Christmas lights, consisting of huge fairy lights and elegant chandeliers, are a highlight of the Advent season in Vienna. The sparkling decorations give the street a festive and at the same time exclusive atmosphere that attracts visitors from all over the world.

The Graben offers a unique mix of historical splendor and modern luxury and is therefore a must for every visitor to Vienna.
