Dinoland Katzenberg offers visitors an exciting journey into prehistoric times. Over 100 life-size dinosaur models set up in the middle of nature bring the prehistoric world to life. Dinoland is an experience especially for families, where children can not only marvel at the impressive dinosaurs, but also learn through play. Adventurous walking paths and interactive stations make the visit an unforgettable trip.
The Dinopark, or rather the Dinoland Katzenberg only opened its doors in Upper Austria in April 2022. It was previously based in Tüßling (Germany), and has now moved just across the border to Austria.
The beautifully landscaped forest and meadow area covers an area of 40,000 square metres. After the entrance, you walk along winding paths past a total of 72 dinosaurs. Some of these can even move thanks to complex animatronics. move and make sounds that are deceptively realistic, like the first dinosaur on the path, the Allosaurus. It looks so real that even the smallest visitors might get a little scared. But this fear is unfounded, because you are not allowed to attack the animals (and they are not allowed to attack you), otherwise they could be harmed. Accordingly, the dinosaurs are almost exclusively located behind the marked path.
Visitors come face to face with impressive giants such as the Tyrannosaurus Rex, Triceratops and even the Stegosaurus. All models were made true to the original under scientific supervision. Parents can also delve into the mysterious past of our planet here, as each dinosaur is described on a plaque.
In the Dinodrom The little visitors can do their rounds in Dino scooters. These can be steered freely and moved with the accelerator. But don't worry, the scooter is very modest. By inserting a coin, the children can Dino riding on life-size dinosaurs and win a personalized explorer pass at the Dino Rally.
Also very popular are the daily Shows in the Dino-Live-Arena, which takes place three times a day, namely at 11:30, 13:30 and 15:30.
The show is always announced in advance by megaphone, so you can't miss it. Each show is a little different, so you can watch more than one. However, the show is more for children under 8 years old, as there are, for example, dinosaurs that can be petted (hand puppets). During the show, interesting facts about the dinosaurs are taught in a playful way. For the really clever ones, there is a quiz that gives them a personal certificate.
Here, children are shown a lot of information about life in prehistoric times. The films are child-friendly and entertaining and provide interesting insights into the everyday life of dinosaurs - their habits, their social behavior, what they ate...
Towards the end of the circuit there is also a large playground on a spacious site with challenging climbing and crawling facilities, 2 giant slides, a labyrinth, exciting balancing paths on a wooden spider and, as a special highlight, a Flying Fox, which allows children to "fly" from one tree to another on a tightrope. But don't worry, everything is child-safe.
For a rental fee of €5 you get a sieve, bucket, hammer and chisel. Now you can try your hand at sifting out treasures and uncovering fossils in the research camp. Shark teeth and small gemstones are buried in the sand. If you're really lucky, you might find a fossil in the stone with a hammer and chisel.
Right next to the excavation site there is a beer garden with food and drinks at a good price-performance ratio. You can also get ice cream and shakes here.
Although the dinosaur park doesn't seem that big when you first enter, you should plan on spending at least 3 hours there. We spent almost 5 hours there. The park is for the whole family, but more for children in kindergarten and at most early primary school age. Older children will probably get bored quickly. The dinosaurs are designed with great attention to detail. A little tip: stop and look at a dinosaur for a while. Not every animated dinosaur is constantly moving - even dinosaurs need a break sometimes. The whole park is very clean and well-maintained and definitely worth a visit.
