The Dobratsch Nature Park lies south of Villach and is one of Carinthia's most impressive mountain landscapes. The Villach Alpine Road is particularly well-known, comfortably taking visitors up to an altitude of over 1,700 meters and offering numerous viewpoints. Whether short strolls, alpine hikes, or spectacular views down into the surrounding valleys – the Dobratsch offers a diverse range of nature experiences. In addition to magnificent panoramas, visitors can also expect to find rare plants, alpine wildlife, and two of the highest pilgrimage churches in the Eastern Alps.
The Villach Alpine Road is considered one of the most beautiful panoramic roads in Austria. It winds its way up from Villach-Möltschach to the Villach Alps in numerous hairpin bends over a distance of approximately 16.5 kilometers. During the drive, breathtaking views of Carinthia, the Gail Valley, and the surrounding Alpine ranges unfold time and again.
From the viewpoints along the route, the view extends as far as the Karawanks mountain range, the Julian Alps in Italy and Slovenia, and numerous lakes around Villach. Several rest areas invite you to stop briefly and enjoy the scenery.
Arena View Viewpoint
Shortly after the start of the route, a first wide view of the surroundings opens up.
Turn 2 – View of the ski jump
From this bend you can see the famous Villach ski jumping arena.
P1 Viewing Rest (770 m)
A larger rest area with views of the surrounding landscape.
P2 City and lake view (862 m)
From here there is a particularly beautiful view of Villach and the surrounding lakes.
P3 Waldrast (965 m)
Quiet rest area in the forest with a view towards the Finkenstein castle ruins and into the Gail valley.
P4 Schüttblick (1,020 m)
One of the most interesting viewpoints along the route. From here you can see the large landslide area known as "Schütt," which was created by a historic rockfall. At the same time, the view opens up to the Julian Alps and the Karawanks mountain range.
P5 Three-Country View (1,307 m)
The panorama here extends across three countries: Austria, Italy and Slovenia.
The Villacher Alpe Alpine Garden is one of the highest-altitude botanical gardens in Austria. Several hundred alpine plant species from different mountain regions grow on approximately 10,000 m².
Some of the plants even grow here in their natural habitat. The garden thus offers a good overview of alpine flora and is particularly worth seeing in summer during the flowering season. There is a separate entrance fee.
The "Rote Wand" viewing platform is also accessible from the parking lot at the Alpine Garden. From here, the view drops steeply about 400 meters down into the valley below. The panoramic view of the Karawanks and the Julian Alps is particularly impressive.
A short wooden footbridge leads through the forest directly to the viewpoint.
P7 Gamsblick viewpoint (approx. 1,550 m)
This viewpoint is well above the tree line. From here, there is a wide view over the Gail Valley and towards the Julian Alps. With a bit of luck, you might also spot chamois in the area, which live on the rocky slopes around the Dobratsch mountain.
P8 Berggasthof Aichingerhütte
The Aichingerhütte mountain inn is a popular stop along the Villach Alpine Road. Right next to the inn is a small exhibition about the birdlife of the nature park entitled "Rulers of the Skies".
From the terrace there is a beautiful view of several Carinthian lakes as well as the surrounding mountain ranges.
P9 Panoramic and lake view
This viewpoint offers a particularly expansive view over the lake district around Villach. On a clear day, you can see, among other things, Lake Faak, Lake Ossiach, and parts of the Drava Valley.
P10 Rosstrattenblick viewpoint
Shortly before the end of the road, another impressive panorama opens up over the Gail Valley and towards the Karawanks mountain range. The viewpoint is already located in the high alpine zone and provides a good impression of the open landscape of the Dobratsch mountain.
The Rosstratte is the highest point on the Villach Alpine Road accessible by car. Here you will find a large parking area, several viewpoints, and the Rosstrattenstüberl (a small restaurant).
Numerous hiking trails into the nature park start from here. The hike to the Dobratsch summit at 2,166 meters above sea level is particularly popular. The trail leads across alpine meadows and offers breathtaking views along the way.
Nearby are also two of the highest pilgrimage churches in the Eastern Alps: the German Church and the Slovenian Church.
The Dobratsch is an important protected area in Carinthia and is characterized by an exceptionally diverse landscape. Alpine meadows, rocky summit areas and extensive forests provide habitat for numerous animal species.
With a bit of luck, you might spot golden eagles, chamois, or marmots here. The area is also botanically interesting, as it is home to many rare alpine plants.
Particularly striking is the large landslide area known as "Schütt" on the south side of the mountain. This area was formed by a historical rockfall and today creates a unique landscape with a warm microclimate and special vegetation.
