The Coburger Hütte, which sits above the lake and from which you have a fantastic view over the Drachensee and the surrounding mountains. Here you can enjoy a hearty snack and take in the impressive landscape.
Starting point: Ehrwalder Almbahn (mountain station)
Most hikers begin their tour at the Ehrwalder Almbahn mountain station (approx. 1,500 m). From here, a wide gravel path (trail no. 812) leads uphill, initially across alpine meadows and through light forest, to the Seebenalm. This section takes about 30–40 minutes and is also suitable for families. Those who prefer can start in the valley in Ehrwald; this adds about 1.5 hours to the hiking time.
Vfrom the Seebenalm to the Seebensee
Beyond the Seebenalm, follow the well-signposted road uphill to the turquoise Seebensee (approx. 1,657 m). Here the path runs mostly level along the western shore. The view of the Zugspitze massif and the Mieming Range is spectacular. Up to this point, the trail remains easy and runs predominantly on gravel paths.
Ascent to the Coburg Hut
At the eastern end of the Seebensee lake, the path to the Coburger Hütte branches off (follow the signs). The character of the route now changes: a steep, winding mountain path leads up to the hut, gaining approximately 250 meters in altitude. This section includes a short, cable-secured rocky section; sure-footedness and a head for heights are essential here. Good hiking boots are strongly recommended. After about 45–60 minutes, you reach the Drachensee lake, on whose western shore the Coburger Hütte sits perched on a hill.
At Dragon Lake
The Drachensee (Dragon Lake) lies at an altitude of 1,910 meters in a high-alpine basin. Those who wish can walk around the lake along its northern shore to the mountain hut and stop there for refreshments. The total time from the Ehrwalder Almbahn mountain station to the lake is approximately 2–2.5 hours (depending on walking speed and breaks). For the return trip, take the same path back to the Seebensee and on to the mountain station. The entire tour, including a break at the hut, takes approximately 4–5 hours, covering a distance of around 11 km with an elevation gain of about 850 meters.
In addition to hiking, the Drachensee also offers interesting routes for ambitious mountaineers. The lake is a starting point for challenging summit tours on the surrounding mountains, including the Ehrwalder SonnenspitzeAnyone who chooses one of these tours will be rewarded with an even more breathtaking view of the valley and the surrounding mountains.
The Drachensee is a perfect place for all those who appreciate the untouched nature of the Tyrolean Alps and are not afraid of the challenges of a high mountain hike. The spectacular landscape and the peace and quiet away from the main paths make it a special highlight for experienced hikers.
