The Ghost Mountain in the Salzburg region is an interactive adventure destination for families with children – located in St. Johann im Pongau, in the middle of Snow Space SalzburgDuring the summer months, the Gernkogel, at 1,800 meters above sea level, transforms into the "Realm of the Merry Ghosts." Over 40 play stations, stroller-friendly hiking trails, a via ferrata, and themed areas ensure a varied day.
We visited the Ghost Mountain ourselves and can confirm: The mix of exercise, nature, and imagination delights children and adults alike. A particularly practical feature: many of the trails are also accessible with a stroller.
The valley station of the Alpendorf gondola is easily accessible via the B311 (Grossarltal exit). From there, the gondola takes you up to the Gernkogel in about 15 minutes. A spacious adventure playground awaits you at the valley station – ideal for warming up little explorers.
Once at the top, the ghost experience begins with a short walk or a leisurely ride on the Ghost Mountain Train (from 9:15 a.m., every 30 minutes). This takes you directly to the center of the adventure world—even with a stroller.
At Ghost Mountain, you'll immerse yourself in four themed adventure worlds, accompanied by the mascots Spuki and Gspensti. We particularly enjoyed the contrast between the nature-oriented hike and the imaginative stations.
The Wichtelweg (Witch Trail) is ideal for younger children: Here, friendly ghosts, cone-shooting booths, and water games await. Older children can romp around on slides, climbing towers, and the ghost swing. A small lake and a talking ghost gate are also among the attractions.
The most popular stations include the haunted castle, the new ghost jump tower, and the oversized aerial swings. Especially practical: Many stations are shaded or combined with water – ideal on hot days. An insider tip is the free ghost medallion, which you can get along with a sticker book at the checkout. If you complete all the tasks, you'll receive a small gift.
If you're looking for adventure, don't miss Drachi's Via Ferrata. This via ferrata leads along a 40-meter-high wall and is ideal for young people ages 12 and up. Important: All equipment (helmet, harness, and set) must be rented in advance in the valley – there are no rentals available on the mountain!
We recommend only tackling the trail with an experienced guide. Every Tuesday during the summer holidays, there is also a guided tour with certified mountain guides – ideal for beginners.
It's best to arrive early (before 10:00 a.m.) to avoid long waits and take advantage of the cheaper "Early Bird Hiking Ticket." On hot days, be sure to bring a swimsuit for the water features. Sunscreen, a hat, and sturdy shoes are mandatory—even on the easy trails.
For small children, a baby carrier is often a better choice than a buggy – even if many paths are well-developed.
In winter, the Ghost Mountain is dormant – almost. A few "restless" ghosts haunt the Devil's Route near the Strassalmbahn cable car. A brief but exciting contrast to the summer world for anyone who visits the area in winter.
The Alpendorf Gondola and the Geisterberg have been awarded the "Best Austrian Summer Mountain Railways" seal of approval by the Austrian Cable Car Association. This guarantees certified safety and a well-thought-out family experience on the mountain.
