A city of historical contrasts and natural beauty

Gmünd, a town in the northern Waldviertel, offers a mixture of historical architecture and cultural diversity. Located near the Czech border, Gmünd invites you to explore history.

Cross-border history

The location of Gmünd directly on the border with the Czech Republic gives the city a special historical and cultural significance. After the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy, a part of Gmünd, known as Böhmzeil, the present-day city of České Velenice, was ceded to the Czech Republic. This cross-border character shapes the city to this day and makes it a living example of the eventful history of Central Europe.
We found it particularly practical that the shops in the Czech part of Gmünd were open on Sundays. It was no problem to quickly buy a few screws in the Haihang Shopping Center. There is also an excellent Chinese quarter with good restaurants on the side.

The main square of Gmünd

The main square is the beating heart of the city and a place where history, culture and modern life meet. The square is surrounded by historic buildings and offers numerous opportunities for visitors to enjoy the flair of the city.

Here you will find impressive historical buildings, including the Old Town Hall and the famous Sgraffito Houses. These houses, with their decorative facades, are a testament to the region's rich history and craftsmanship.

The main square is also a popular place for culinary delights. Here you will find traditional inns such as the Stadtwirtshaus Hopferl and the Romantik Hotel & Restaurant Stern, which offer regional delicacies. From Waldviertler poppy seed cakes to freshly brewed city beer, the local gastronomy offers something for every taste.

Gmünd Castle: A Renaissance castle full of history

A highlight in Gmünd is Gmünd Castle. This Renaissance castle impresses with its well-preserved architecture and magnificent interiors. On a tour of the castle, you can marvel at the historic halls and the impressive collection of works of art and antiques. Cultural events and exhibitions are also held here regularly, keeping the castle's historic charm alive.

For nature lovers, the Blockheide Nature Park a wonderful way to explore the unique landscape of the Waldviertel. The striking rock formations and the well-signposted hiking trails make the park an ideal destination for walks and hikes.
