The Haydn Church, also known as the Bergkirche, is an important cultural and religious landmark of EisenstadtTogether with the impressive Calvary Hill, it offers visitors insights into the history, art and religious traditions of the region. The place is known for its connection to Joseph Haydn, whose mausoleum is located in the church.
The pilgrimage church “Visitation of the Virgin Mary” was built on the Eisenstadt Oberberg between 1715 and 1803 according to the plans of Prince Paul I Esterházy. The plan was to be the largest church in western Hungary, but for financial reasons only a small part of the original plans could be realized. The building that stands today is merely the presbytery of the originally planned monumental church.
The high altar painting “The Visitation of the Virgin Mary” is a copy of a painting by Dorffmeister from 1797. The famous Haydn organ, built according to Joseph Haydn’s specifications, also dates from the same year. Several of his masses were premiered in this church under his direction, which gives the Haydn Church a special significance in the world of music.
Under the north tower of the church is the final resting place of Joseph Haydn - the Haydn Mausoleum. Haydn, one of the most famous composers of the Viennese Classical period, found a dignified burial place here. The mausoleum is a central attraction for music lovers and tourists who want to experience the composer's legacy first hand.
The Calvary behind the church is one of the most impressive religious monuments in Eisenstadt. It shows the Stations of the Cross and was built in the 18th century as a baroque devotional ensemble. The depiction of Christ's Passion invites visitors to take a meditative walk. From the highest point of the Calvary, in clear weather, you can see all the way to Lake Neusiedl. However, this view is only visible in special weather conditions.
For centuries, the Haydn Church has been a destination for pilgrims from all over the world. Processions take place here, especially during Holy Week and Easter. The church is also a popular wedding church and regularly hosts cultural events that maintain the musical connection to Joseph Haydn.
Guided tours of the church, the Calvary, the Haydn Mausoleum, the crypt and the treasury can be organized on request at the parish office. These tours last about an hour and offer deep insights into the history and significance of the entire ensemble.
