Hintersteiner See: An emerald green jewel in the Wilder Kaiser

The Hintersteiner See, embedded in the impressive backdrop of the Wilder Kaiser Mountains, impresses with its crystal-clear, emerald-green water. It is considered one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in Tyrol and invites you to go hiking, take a refreshing swim and spend relaxing hours in nature.

Where is the Hintersteiner See? The Hintersteiner See is a mountain lake in the Wilder Kaiser nature reserve and belongs to the municipality of Scheffau in the Austrian federal state of Tyrol.
Can you swim in Lake Hintersteiner? Yes, there is even an outdoor swimming pool with a canteen. The water is even drinkable.
How do I get to the lake? By car or the hiking bus. This runs daily from the end of May to mid-October. The stop is in the village center of Scheffau (on the north side of the church) - from there the bus runs regularly to the Hintersteiner See and back.
How big is the Hintersteiner See? The mountain lake is about 56 hectares in size and up to 36 meters deep and is located at 883 m above sea level

Highly recommended is the round the lakeThere are 3 different places to stop for a break, all of them on the north bank. The shady south bank is nicer to walk on, as you walk through a forest. You can find a detailed report in our blog.

The beach

The Hintersteiner See is a mountain lake with drinking water quality! Underground springs fill it with fresh mountain water. The temperatures are accordingly.

In the summer months it warms up to a average temperature between 20 and 22 degrees. After a nice circular hike but this is exactly the right thing.

You can relax comfortably on a large lawn. There is enough space, but you have to look out for a shady spot. The beach has a small cafeteria, offering snacks like frankfurters, currywurst, tarte flambée, pizza, baguettes, meatloaf rolls, ice cream, and drinks. Despite the full parking lot, it never felt too busy. Sun lounger and umbrella rentals, as well as SUPs, are available. Dogs are not allowed at the lido.
