Hohenwerfen Castle, majestically situated on a rock high above the Salzach Valley, offers a fascinating insight into medieval history. This impressive 11th-century fortress once served as a defensive structure and later as a prison.
A well-signposted footpath leads from the car park up to the fortress. The climb takes about 15 to 20 minutes and runs mostly through a shady forest. For visitors who prefer a more convenient access, there is also an elevator that leads directly to the castle. The footpath offers impressive views of the Salzach Valley and the surrounding mountains along the way. We were traveling with our 5-year-old this time, which is why we chose the elevator. We parked at 10:00 a.m., bought tickets and at 10:12 a.m. we were at the top after a 2-minute drive. Perfect for the guided tour at 10:20 a.m.
A tour of Hohenwerfen Castle is an absolute must. The knowledgeable guides will tell you about the history and architecture of the fortress and lead you through impressive rooms such as the torture chamber, the chapel and the knights' hall. The view from the castle walls up by the tower bell is particularly fascinating, offering a wide view over the valley and the surrounding mountains. Guided tours are offered regularly and are included in the entrance fee. The tour lasts about 50 minutes.
We finish the tour shortly after 11 a.m., perfect for the bird of prey show, which is also included in the price. The show takes place daily in the castle courtyard. The show times are usually 11:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. Here you can see majestic eagles, falcons and other birds of prey in action. The falconers explain a lot of interesting facts about the art of falconry and the protection of these impressive animals. The show is particularly exciting and educational for children. It lasts about half an hour.
The Burgschenke is the castle's main restaurant and offers a cozy, medieval atmosphere. Here you can enjoy traditional Austrian dishes. Highlights include Wiener Schnitzel, burgers and homemade aspic. The Burgschenke is open during the castle's opening hours and offers a varied menu that also includes coffee, cake, strudel and ice cream. However, you have to eat inside.
For a quick snack, there is a snack stand in the castle courtyard. Among other things, the famous Bosna sausage, a spicy Austrian specialty, is on offer here. There is also fried chicken salad, pizza and other small items. The advantage: you can eat in the castle courtyard.
A special culinary highlight is the Knight's Feast, a medieval banquet held in the castle. This event can be booked in advance for groups of at least 25 people. The Knight's Feast includes a seven-course meal accompanied by medieval music and a three-hour program that offers guests an authentic experience.
