The Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna is a residential building with an extraordinary design and is one of the most photographed buildings in the city. Built in the 1980s according to the ideas of Artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, it stands out with its colorful façade, slanted lines, and planted roofs. It can only be viewed from the outside – it's a great stop for architecture enthusiasts or those strolling through the 3rd district. Across the street is the Hundertwasser Village, with a souvenir shop, a few exhibition elements, and a café right next to the building.
The Hundertwasserhaus was built between 1983 and 1985 and is considered one of the most famous projects by the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Together with architect Josef Krawina, he created a residential building that deliberately distances itself from conventional urban architecture: with irregular windows, slanted lines, bright colors, and planted areas. It is still occupied by tenants today; therefore, the interior is not accessible.
Directly across the street from the house is the Hundertwasser Village. Here you'll find a shop with typical souvenirs, some Hundertwasser-style design elements, and a small exhibition. The area is covered and open to the public, but is more suitable for a quick visit than for an extended stay.
At the foot of the Hundertwasser House is a small terrace café with a view of the facade. It serves coffee, snacks, and simple drinks—you can sit outside when the weather's nice. For us, it was a pleasant spot for a short break, but not necessarily a place you'd travel specifically for.
Anyone who specifically wants to see Hundertwasser architecture, or is already nearby, can easily take in the house during a stroll in the 3rd district. It is an interesting example of creative individualism in the cityscape, but can be quickly visited as a standalone attraction. Those who want to learn more about the artist can find information in the nearby Art House Vienna a more comprehensive exhibition (admission fee required).
