History and Architecture

The origins of Kaprun Castle date back to the 12th century, when it was first mentioned in a document. Over time, it changed hands several times, including the Archbishopric of Salzburg. After its destruction in the Peasants' War, it was partially rebuilt, but lost its military significance in the 17th century. It wasn't until the 1970s that a comprehensive restoration project began, which was eventually taken over by a private association that maintains the castle to this day and uses it for cultural purposes. Particularly striking are the Romanesque keep, the circular wall with its defensive towers, and the impressive Knights' Hall with its wooden roof truss.

Events and cultural life

Although the castle is not open to the public every day, it plays a central role in the region's cultural life. Regular events take place throughout the year, including concerts, readings, and exhibitions. The castle is particularly well-known. Medieval Festival, which is held once a year in the summer and attracts visitors with mock combat demonstrations, music, a craft market, and jousting tournaments.
