Kaprun Castle is one of the most striking historical buildings in Pinzgau. High above the town centre of Kaprun It sits enthroned on a rock at the foot of the Hohe Tauern It offers not only a glimpse into regional history but also a unique venue for concerts, medieval festivals, and weddings. Originally built in the 12th century, the castle has been expanded, destroyed, and restored several times over the centuries. Today, it serves as a cultural center and—despite its rather limited opening hours—is a popular destination for visitors interested in history, architecture, or events in a unique setting.
The origins of Kaprun Castle date back to the 12th century, when it was first mentioned in a document. Over time, it changed hands several times, including the Archbishopric of Salzburg. After its destruction in the Peasants' War, it was partially rebuilt, but lost its military significance in the 17th century. It wasn't until the 1970s that a comprehensive restoration project began, which was eventually taken over by a private association that maintains the castle to this day and uses it for cultural purposes. Particularly striking are the Romanesque keep, the circular wall with its defensive towers, and the impressive Knights' Hall with its wooden roof truss.
Although the castle is not open to the public every day, it plays a central role in the region's cultural life.
