The Kitzsteinhorn offers a unique experience in the Alps that goes far beyond classic winter sports. With TOP OF SALZBURG, Salzburg's highest excursion destination at 3,029 meters, featuring two spectacular panoramic platforms, a mystical information tunnel, and Austria's highest cinema, the Kitzsteinhorn offers a wide range of activities in both summer and winter, from skiing and snowboarding to exciting experiences in the glacier world.
Our adventure on the Kitzsteinhorn begins at the MK parking lot Maiskogelbahn (Kitzsteinhornplatz 1a, 5710 Kaprun). This cable car route via the 3K K-onnection is said to be the most beautiful way to the summit, and we couldn't wait to experience it.
At 10:30 a.m. we board the first gondola. The view is breathtaking: we glide over the green alpine meadows, with a view of Zell am See and the surrounding mountains. Below us, cows graze peacefully on the lush green pastures - a classic image of the Austrian Alpine idyll.
After about 10 minutes we could get off at the first station, but we continue, full of anticipation of the higher mountain stations. At 10:48 we reach the first larger mountain station, where we have to change to take the next gondola. Here the gondolas coming from Kaprun cross - a busy place where there is even a Intersport for spontaneous equipment. But we want to move on and climb into the Gletscherjet 2.
The summit station, situated at an altitude of 3,029 meters, leaves us in awe. From the panoramic platform "TOP OF SALZBURG," we gaze across the sea of peaks in the Hohe Tauern mountains all the way down to Lake Zell. The station building also houses the summit restaurant, Salzburg's highest restaurant, where you can not only enjoy excellent food but also take in the fantastic view. It feels like being on top of the world.
Our journey continues through the mystical, 360-meter-long "National Park Gallery" information tunnel, which leads us to the panoramic platform of the same name. The view from here is simply breathtaking: the surrounding peaks, the vastness of the glaciers, and...
On the way back, we stopped at the Gletschermühle restaurant, where we ended the day with a shandy and a wheat beer. The Szegediner goulash was a delicious choice, but the Kaiserschmarrn unfortunately left something to be desired – it was served without raisins.
