Lake Zell is located in the middle of the Alps in the district Zell am See in the Salzburg region. Its location between mountains, city, and lake makes it a popular year-round destination for swimmers, walkers, sports enthusiasts, and families. The excellent water quality, three lidos, and numerous recreational opportunities make it particularly versatile. The lake is open to the public and easily accessible by train and car.
Lake Zell offers three well-equipped beach resorts: the Zell am See beach with diving tower and water slide, the quieter Thumersbach lido on the east side and the Seespitz lido in the south. All three have sunbathing lawns, changing rooms, restrooms, children's areas, and restaurants. The water temperature reaches a pleasant 22 to 24°C in midsummer. The pools are usually open from June to early September.

The main pier is located at the Esplanade in Zell am See . On board you will receive drinks and small snacks, and in good weather you can sit on the open deck with a view of the Kitzsteinhorn. An approximately 11 km circular trail leads directly around Lake Zell. It is almost entirely flat and ideal for walks, jogs, or bike rides. The trail is also easily accessible with a stroller or balance bike. Along the route, there are several playgrounds, benches, cafés, and frequent access to the water.
Those who enjoy hiking will find several easy trails around the lake as well as connections to higher regions. A particularly worthwhile combination is the cable car to the SchmittenhöheFrom there, you can enjoy the best views of Lake Zell, the Steinernes Meer, and the Kitzsteinhorn. The Ronachkopf near Thumersbach and the small mountain trail above Zell also offer good views.
There are numerous child-friendly activities for families around Lake Zell: paddling areas at the lidos, pedal boating, nature experiences at the birdwatching tower in Thumersbach, and miniature golf near the lake. In winter, the lake transforms into a tranquil spot with views of snow-capped mountains—perfect for a stroll or a picnic in the sun.
On the shores of Lake Zell you will find several restaurants with direct views of the water. Seecamp Restaurant on the north shore is an insider tip – ideal for breakfast or dinner with a clear view of the lake and mountains. On the east side near Thumersbach is the Beach Club Zell am See , where you can spend relaxing hours by the water with snacks and drinks.
