Lake Leopoldstein, nestled in the Styrian Alps, impresses with its crystal-clear water and impressive mountain backdrop. The mountain lake is ideal for hiking, swimming and boating and is a popular destination for nature lovers. A walk around the lake or a relaxing boat trip offer breathtaking views and relaxation in the midst of untouched nature.
After our visit on Erzberg Adventure, we drove straight to this beautiful lake, which also appears in the waterman legend of the Erzberg. Both stops can be easily combined in one day, as they are only a few minutes apart by car.
It is located at 628 m above sea level at the foot of the Seemauer in the western Hochschwab group, embedded in the mountains. The lake is 1400 meters long and 370 meters wide, its deepest point is 31 m. The lake is completely undeveloped and natural. There is only a small guest house at the car park (the Leopoldsteinerseestüberl) and another at the Seestüberl on the eastern shore of the lake.
On sunny days the water surface shimmers emerald green. Speaking of sun: in summer you can swim in the natural bathing beach into the lake, but the temperature reaches a maximum of 20°, as the lake is fed purely by spring water from the surrounding mountains. In summer you can swim daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. electric pedal boats and rowing boats For climbing fans there are several via ferratas in different levels of difficulty.
We can only recommend this walk to everyone. It is very easy to manage, is mostly flat, but is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. We walk anti-clockwise along the lake. Again and again you have views of the crystal clear water. After about 20 minutes you reach the Seestüberl on the eastern shore of the lake (the snack station of the Leopoldsteinerseestüberl at the car park). There isn't much choice here, but you can get drinks, ice cream, sandwiches, sausages and very tasty pastries. It's definitely worth a stop because the view is simply fantastic.
The path now becomes narrower and continues through the forest along the lake. You come across a few roots, and every now and then it goes up and down over small hills. The view remains fantastically beautiful. If you don't take a break, you'll be back in about 45 minutes. If you want, you can treat yourself to a snack in the Leopoldsteiner See Stüberl. There are various soups and home-style cooking here, such as Styrian cheese dumplings, roasted dumplings, schnitzel, Leopoldsteinersee toast with tender loin pieces. The flagship dish, however, is the lake trout fried with parsley potatoes. Leopoldsteiner See is definitely worth a trip!
