Leutasch Ghost Gorge & Waterfall Trail

The Leutasch Ghost Gorge is one of the most spectacular gorges in the Alps. Located directly on the border between Tyrol and Bavaria, it was opened in 2006 with a 970-meter-long steel walkway. The walkway leads high above the Leutasch Ache River through the gorge, which is up to 75 meters deep, and offers unique views of the wild natural surroundings. Interactive stations tell the legends surrounding the "Gorge Ghost," making the trail exciting for families. While the Austrian section is more of a hike high above the gorge, the real highlight awaits on the German side: the Waterfall Trail. Here, you get particularly close to the roaring water—an experience not to be missed.

Short info:

  • How long is the round? Total length approximately 3.2 km; the waterfall trail measures approximately 200 m.
  • What is special about it? An airy walkway high above the gorge with a panoramic bridge and themed stations; the waterfall trail leads close to the water to a 23-meter-high waterfall.
  • Admission? Main gorge free; waterfall trail €4 for adults and €2 for children (2025).
  • opening hours? Accessible from April to the end of October (all day, including at night); waterfall trail open daily from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Circular hike through the Ghost Gorge

The tour starts at the P19 car park in Leutasch and leads first to the Klammstüberl. Gorge Spirit Trail An 800-meter-long steel walkway leads high above the Leutascher Ache to the panoramic bridge, which is approximately 75 meters above the river. The view down into the emerald-green gorge is breathtaking, and thanks to sturdy railings, even visitors with a fear of heights feel safe. From here, the path leads through the forest to the Bavarian side to the entrance to the waterfall trail.

Waterfall Trail – the highlight

The waterfall trail is the most beautiful section of the entire circuit. A wooden walkway, just a few meters above the water, leads directly into the narrow gorge. At the end, the Ache River plunges 23 meters into the depths – the roar is impressive, and the proximity to the water makes this section unique. Admission is €4 per adult (€2 for children) and is worth every cent.

Other routes & family offers

In addition to the main round, there is the Goblin Path, a roughly 2-km-long themed trail on the Bavarian side with puzzles and stories for children. Those short on time can also take a short, accessible 500-meter circular trail. You should plan on 2–3 hours for the complete gorge circuit, including the waterfall trail.
