Lunzer See: Idyllic lake tour in the heart of the Mostviertel

Lake Lunz, the only natural lake in Lower Austria, offers a picturesque backdrop for relaxed walks and hikes. The lake circuit is particularly popular, a 4-kilometer-long path that runs directly along the shore and offers wonderful views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. Lake Lunz is considered to be the only naturally formed lake in Lower Austria and is also the coldest. Its water quality is class 1. The Seebach flows through the lake (it exchanges the volume of the lake three times a year). There is a restaurant and boat rental on the west bank.

We park our car at the Lunzer See car park (address: Lunz a. See 13, 3293). 1.5 hours costs €2, up to 3 hours €4 and the day ticket costs €6.
The circular hiking trail starts diagonally opposite. Right at the beginning there is a boat rental, an ice cream shop and a souvenir shop.

It goes anti-clockwise, we start at 1:00 p.m. The path is suitable for all-terrain strollers, but cycling is prohibited. Dogs must be kept on a leash. First, the path goes uphill on a concrete path, past properties. The asphalt path then turns into a narrow gravel path that goes downhill again towards the lake. This section may be a little more difficult with a stroller, but it is manageable. The path now goes along a narrow forest path, always about 10 meters above the lake shore.

The thicket rarely provides a really good view of the lake, but the hike through the beautiful forest is still an experience. Every now and then there are small paths leading down to the shore, but since it was raining in the morning, it was too slippery for us.

After about half an hour you come down to the shore of the lake for the first time. You are now almost on the other side of the lake. We take a long rest on a bench, have a picnic and enjoy the view.

We continue our circuit, the path leads over a bridge and around the lake. Here we leave the narrow forest path.

From now on, the way back is unfortunately less attractive, as you now have to walk along the sidewalk of the lakeside road along the entire length of the lake. If it weren't for the road, you would still have a beautiful view of the meadows, lake, forests and mountains. On the way back, you pass a free bathing area with a jetty in the lake, before finally, almost at the end of the tour, you pass the Lunz am See bathing resort.

We arrive back at the parking lot at 3:00 p.m., but first we treat ourselves to an ice cream.

Lake Lunz in winter

Even in the cold season, Lake Lunz has its charm. Nestled in a deep snow-covered landscape, the frozen lake appears particularly idyllic. When the ice is thick enough, it's even open for ice skating—a true winter highlight for all ages.

The lakeside trail is also accessible in winter, often covered with a light blanket of snow. The view of the snow-capped mountains, reflected in the ice on clear days, is particularly beautiful. Those who want to experience the winter magic even more intensely can warm up in one of the surrounding inns and soak up the tranquil atmosphere of the wintry Mostviertel region.
