Klosterneuburg Abbey: A Place of History and Art near Vienna

Klosterneuburg Abbey, just a few kilometers from Vienna, is an impressive Augustinian Canonry. Founded in 1114, it combines ornate architecture, valuable works of art and a long religious tradition. Visitors can explore the magnificent Baroque and Gothic buildings, the famous Verdun Altar and the historic wine cellars. The abbey is a place of peace and culture that combines history and art in a fascinating way.

Klosterneuburg Abbey, located near Vienna, is a monastery known for its history, art and architecture. The abbey church was completed and consecrated on September 29, 1136. The abbey also owns the oldest and one of the largest wineries in Austria.

The sights in the monastery

collegiate church

The Basilica of Klosterneuburg is one of the most beautiful churches in Austria and has an impressive collection of baroque art and architecture. It is home to one of Austria’s most important instruments, the famous organ the collegiate church, which was built in 1642 by Johann Freundt from Passau.

The former chapter house houses the famous Verdun Altarpiece from 1181, which is one of the most important works of art of the Middle Ages. In 1936, a reliquary was built above it for the bones of Saint Leopold Also worth seeing is the adjacent Leopoldihof (Kuchlhof). Please note: the long monastery tour lasts 90 minutes and only takes place twice a day. Audio guides are available in 14 different languages.

In the monastery's treasury you can see an impressive collection of religious objects, jewels and other treasures from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque. These include precious reliquaries, liturgical equipment, artistically designed chalices, monstrances and crucifixes, sculptures, paintings and much more. A special highlight is the collection of the Vienna Workshops, which offers impressive insights into the arts and crafts traditions of the early 20th century.

The Klosterneuburg monastery operates the oldest winery in Austria still in existence today. It produces some of the best wines in Austria.
