Reith im Alpbachtal is located at the entrance to the Alpbach Valley in Tyrol and offers numerous opportunities for relaxing and active days in both summer and winter. The small village is particularly popular with families due to its compact, well-connected layout, yet close to nature. Whether hiking, swimming, skiing, or tobogganing, Reith boasts a compact yet diverse range of activities in the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps.
In summer, the Reither Kogel is a central destination. Reitherkogel cable car You can easily reach an altitude of around 1,200 m above sea level. From there, various hiking trails lead over alpine pastures, through forests, and to viewpoints – many of which are also suitable for children. The stroller-friendly circular trail with the "Juppi Magic Forest", an interactive adventure trail with play stations, viewing platforms, and rest areas. The entire route takes about 1.5 hours.
Reith also offers beautiful hikes away from the local mountain – for example to the Kerschbaumersattelalm or to the neighboring village Alpbach. If you want to take it easy, you'll also find walking paths right in town, for example around Lake Reither.
Lake Reither See is located right in the town center and is a popular meeting place on hot summer days. The small, well-maintained lake offers a sunbathing lawn, shallow entry areas, a children's playground, and a kiosk. It's ideal for families or anyone looking for a quick cool-off after a hike. Water temperatures range from around 22 to 24 degrees Celsius in midsummer.
A highlight for families is the large children's park in Reith. It features mini golf, pit-pat, trampolines, electric cars, a petting zoo, and even a small train. The park is open from April to October and can be enjoyed even in changeable weather.
In the center of the village lies the parish church of St. Peter, which dates back to the 12th century. Also worth seeing is the Moserhof, with its richly decorated wooden facades. Just a few minutes away is Matzen Castle with its publicly accessible castle parkThe 15-hectare landscaped park is perfect for a relaxing stroll – the castle itself is private and can only be viewed from the outside.
In winter, the Reither Kogel transforms into a small but excellent ski area, ideal for beginners and families. There are several practice lifts, a children's ski school, and easy slopes with beautiful views. The valley station is located right in the village, and there is ample parking.
Reith is also part of the ski area “Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau" with a total of 145 kilometers of slopes. The free ski bus takes you to the valley station in Alpbach in just a few minutes, where additional lifts and more challenging slopes are available.
Even without skis, you can enjoy winter in Reith. One of the most popular activities is tobogganing on the Reither Kogel winter hiking trail. The trail is approximately 3 km long, well-maintained, and suitable for both families and more athletic tobogganers. You can ascend on foot, or you can take the gondola.
For winter hikers, there are several signposted trails around the village—through forests, across open meadows, or along small streams. A walk around Lake Reither is particularly atmospheric during snowfall. Snowshoe hikes are also offered in the village.
Those looking for variety can participate in guided alpaca hikes or book a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride. Cross-country skiers will find a small network of regularly groomed trails in neighboring Alpbach. Reith itself has an ice skating rink, which opens when the weather allows.
In Reith, we particularly appreciate the family atmosphere. It's never crowded, the paths are short, and it's easy to get into the day. In summer, the Juppi Magic Forest is one of our favorite routes for family hikes. In winter, we recommend combining skiing in the morning with a leisurely toboggan ride in the afternoon. Alpbachtal Card, which is included in many accommodations, offers some useful free services such as free use of the Reitherkogel cable car or entry to Lake Reither.
