The Rosegg Zoo, the largest animal park in Carinthia, offers a nature-based experience for the whole family. You will mostly look in vain for exotic animals here, apart from a few kangaroos, but you can expect an impressive mix of native wild animals and a beautiful natural environment. The park was originally founded in 1830 by Peter Ritter von Bohr as a princely hunting ground, and the zoo wall built at that time still marks the boundaries of the park today.
The Rosegg Zoo stretches over the wooded slopes of a former hilltop castle and offers about 400 animals from 35 species a home. Particularly impressive is the large Hirschwiesewhere you can see wild animals such as ibexes, peacocks and deer up close. The animals often move freely in the park, giving visitors the opportunity to get up close and personal with them.
The Flatly through the park takes you through beautiful forests and past a picturesque lake, which makes the walk itself an experience – even if you don’t see all the animals that day. The path up to the castle ruins is a bit more challenging and not suitable for strollers, but the rest of the circular route is easy to manage and also ideal for families.
At the end of the circular trail, the highlight for children awaits you: the petting zooHere the little ones can Donkey, llamas, goats, rabbits and kangaroos feed and pet. This area of the zoo is particularly popular with families and offers the perfect opportunity to end the day in a relaxed atmosphere. The park also has a playground and a small buffet, so that your physical well-being is also taken care of.
The Rosegg Zoo is not only a place for animal observation, but also a piece of living history. The historic zoo wall and the entire park around the Rosegg Castle Ruins give you the feeling of being immersed in a time long gone. Even if you don't see any animals, the visit is worth it just for the beautiful landscape and the opportunity to hike in nature.
