Saalbach – holiday resort with tradition and mountain panorama

Saalbach is one of the two main towns in the popular Saalbach Hinterglemm holiday region in Salzburger Land. Nestled in the Kitzbühel Alps, this lively village in the Glemmtal valley offers a wide range of options year-round for active holidaymakers, families, and connoisseurs. As part of Saalbach Hinterglemm, the town benefits from one of Austria's largest ski areas and a comprehensive summer offering for hikers and bikers.

Townscape and atmosphere

Saalbach boasts a charming town center with a pedestrian zone, hotels, shops, cafés, and restaurants. The baroque parish church on the slope above the center is a striking feature of the townscape. Despite the tourist infrastructure, the town has retained its traditional character. In winter, it's bustling with ski tourists, while in summer, things are more relaxed – but never boring.

Winter in Saalbach

The place is a direct entry point into the Skicircus Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang-Fieberbrunn, one of Austria's largest ski areas with approximately 270 kilometers of slopes. Several modern cable cars lead from the village to the surrounding mountains, such as the Schattberg and Bernkogel. The options range from easy family runs to challenging trails. Cross-country skiers, tobogganers, and winter hikers also get their money's worth. Après-ski is just as much a part of the experience in Saalbach as stopping off at one of the numerous ski huts.

Ski World Cup in Saalbach

Saalbach is a frequent host of international ski competitions and plays a significant role in the World Cup calendar. Alpine World Cup races take place here at irregular intervals, including downhill, super-G, giant slalom, and slalom. Races are usually held on the challenging slopes on the Zwölferkogel, which are also known for their spectacular spectator backdrop.

It is particularly worth mentioning that Saalbach is the venue for the Alpine World Ski Championships 2025 The entire race took place compactly on a single mountain – a concept that was well received by athletes and fans alike.

For cross-country skiers, the Saalbach Hinterglemm region offers two attractive trails:

  • Valley head trail: This approximately 10 km long trail runs along the Saalach River to the Lindlingalm. It is suitable for both classic and skating techniques and offers an idyllic route through the snowy landscape. 
  • High-altitude trail on the Reiterkogel: A 2 km long skating trail at an altitude of 1,100 to 1,400 meters. Accessed via the Reiterkogelbahn cable car, this trail offers magnificent panoramas and is ideal for extensive altitude training. 

Tobogganing

The toboggan run on the Reiterkogel offers tobogganing fun for the whole family. The track is illuminated at night and promises a thrilling descent. Toboggans can be rented on site.

Summer activities around Saalbach

Saalbach is also an attractive holiday destination during the warmer months. The Saalbach Hinterglemm region is considered one of Austria's leading hiking and biking destinations. Numerous hiking trails begin around the town, from easy alpine tours to summit climbs on the Schattberg or along the Pinzgauer Wanderung (Pinzgau Walk). Mountain bikers will find a dense network of routes and trails – the famous BIG 5 Bike Challenge also runs through Saalbach. Saalbach is a paradise for mountain bikers, with over 400 km of trails of all difficulty levels. Some of the most popular trails:

  • Hacklberg Trail: A flowing trail with breathtaking views that leads from the Schattberg West summit to the Hacklbergalm.
  • Bergstadl Trail: A more challenging alternative with technical refinements and numerous curves.
  • X-Line: At over 6 km long and with a 1,025 m vertical drop, it's one of Europe's longest freeride routes. It offers northshore elements, root carpets, and spectacular views.
  • Blue Line: Ideal for beginners, with simple banked turns and small jumps.
  • Monti Line: A beginner-friendly freeride route with numerous jumps and flowing terrain, perfect for all ages.

Hike

Saalbach is an excellent starting point for hikes of all levels. A total of over 400 kilometers of marked hiking trails are available. Some particularly popular tours include:

  • Pinzgau walk: A scenic high-altitude hike from the Schmittenhöhe to the Schattberg or vice versa. The tour is long (approx. 17 km), but technically easy and offers fantastic views of the Hohe Tauern and the Kitzbühel Alps.
  • Hike to the Spielberghaus: A pleasant family trail from Saalbach over the Kohlmais or through the forest – ideal for strollers. A rustic hut with a playground and refreshment stop awaits you at the top.
  • Schattberg Panorama Trail: A tour from the Schattberg West Summit to the East Summit and on to the middle station. Especially rewarding in clear weather with views over the entire Glemm Valley.
  • Mount Kodok – Adventure Hike: A highlight for families. The hike starts at the top station of the Reiterkogelbahn (Hinterglemm), but is easily accessible from Saalbach by train and a short transfer.

Saalbach is ideal for families – both in summer and winter. In summer, adventure trails such as Montelino's Adventure Trail At the Kohlmaisbahn, it features exciting play and learning stations centered around a little bear who has to find his toys. The trail is stroller-friendly and ideal for families with small children.

In winter, there are dedicated children's areas with practice lifts right in town or at the mountain stations. Ski schools offer tailor-made courses for children ages 3 and up. Toboggan runs, winter hiking trails, and guided snowshoe tours provide variety off the slopes.

Culinary and Hut Life

Whether summer or winter, Saalbach has a lot to offer in terms of culinary delights. Directly in town, you'll find a wide selection of restaurants serving regional and international cuisine. The numerous mountain huts in the surrounding area offer particularly cozy dining options.
