The Schwarzensee in Upper Austria is picturesquely embedded in the Salzkammergut mountains between Wolfgangsee and Attersee. It is considered one of the quieter and less crowded lakes in the region, making it an ideal place for nature lovers, hikers and those seeking peace and quiet. With its location at about 716 meters above sea level and an area of about 1.5 km² The Schwarzensee is a perfect destination for a relaxing excursion or a long hike.
Around the Schwarzensee There are numerous well signposted hiking trails, which offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the crystal clear water of the lake. The approximately 8-kilometer-long circular hiking trail, which is ideal for families and nature lovers. The path leads through an idyllic landscape of forests and meadows and is mostly easy to walk.
Particularly attractive is the section along the Schwarzensee shore, where you will always find wonderful viewpoints that are perfect for a break. On hot summer days, the lake with its clear, refreshing water invites you to take a dip in the cool water. There are no official bathing areas, but in some places it is possible to swim without any problems.
We start in Bad Ischl and arrive at Schwarzensee at around 10:00 a.m. At the end of November we are the first car. We buy a parking ticket from the machine for €2.50. We want to walk anti-clockwise. The path is asphalted and goes slightly downhill and is therefore easy with the stroller to cope with.
After just a few meters you have the first beautiful view of the lake. Unfortunately, it is quite overcast during our visit. Let's hope that the sun comes out. After half an hour of continuous walking downhill, you reach the opposite side of the lake. From here, you continue right towards Moosalm or Attersee. However, we want to go around the lake on the left.
Now we continue on a forest road. However, strollers can still be pushed on the flat road without any problems. We now continue straight ahead along the lake through the beautiful autumn forest. Towards the end of our tour we finally reach the Alpine restaurant "Zur Lore" Schwarzensee. Here we treat ourselves to a cheese dumpling and a meat strudel soup. For the main course we have a Surbratl. Since everything tastes so excellent, we order a plum cake for dessert, which also exceeds our expectations. The last 5 minutes of the tour are slightly uphill to the inn and the parking lot. After about 1 hour walking time we walked around the lake. The sun has come out now, so we walk another few hundred meters to the beautiful viewpoint. In our opinion, you have the best view of the lake from here, as you look down from above. What a view!
The Schwarzensee is also at anglers very popular. The clear water and the quiet atmosphere make the lake a perfect place to relax and at the same time catch char or trout to hope. Fishing licenses can be purchased locally and there are some particularly beautiful spots along the shore that are perfect for a day of fishing.
The Schwarzensee is a true natural idyll that offers many opportunities for relaxation in both summer and winter. In summer, the lake invites you to swimming, boating and hiking In winter it is a quiet retreat where the snowy landscape is particularly charming.
Whether you are looking for a leisurely stroll, a hike through the Alpine landscape or a relaxing day by the water – the Schwarzensee in Upper Austria is a quiet place that brings you closer to the beauty of nature in the Salzkammergut.
