Sigmund Thun Gorge: A natural spectacle of water and rock

The Sigmund Thun Klamm at Kaprun is a spectacular natural wonder that has been formed over thousands of years by the power of water. This narrow, imposing gorge with roaring waterfalls and deep rock formations offers visitors an unforgettable experience. Exploration by day and night

During the day, the Sigmund Thun Gorge can be explored at your leisure. It is often particularly quiet in the morning, so you have nature almost to yourself. The approximately 20-minute walk along the wooden walkways embedded in the rocks leads directly over the raging Kapruner Ache river, which rushes through the narrow gorge. The sound of the water is deafening, and the scenery impresses with enormous rock formations that accompany the path. Entry is with the Zell am See/Kaprun map free, which offers a nice saving.

A special experience is offered by the night tour, which takes place every Friday in the summer months from around 8:30 p.m. The gorge is bathed in mystical light, and the thundering of the water sounds even more impressive in the darkness. However, you have to expect long waiting times, as the night tour is very popular. The ticket costs around €10, and discounts are available through the Kaprun Card are not available. Despite the waiting time, the nighttime atmosphere is an absolute highlight.

At the end of the gorge: the gorge lake

At the end of the gorge, the path leads through an iron gate out into the fresh air. If you want, you can Klammsee which is located above the waterfall. This idyllic, small lake is a relaxing place, especially on warm summer days, and invites you to linger. The Klammsee is also ideal for families, as there are play areas nearby and enough space for a picnic.

In the summer months you can even visit the gorge every Friday evening from around 8:30 p.m. You can find the exact times on the website. Because it was so beautiful, we saw it both during the day and at night.

During the day: When we arrived, there was no one there, so we went straight to the ticket office. With the Zell am See or Kaprun card, entry is once again free! Savings: around ten euros.

Night: The parking lot was already full when I arrived. I climbed up to the gorge and could hardly believe it: a queue about 200m long appeared before me. The ticket for the special night tour costs ten euros. Discounts with the Kaprun CardThere is no such thing here. It took 25 minutes before I finally got my ticket. It then took about the same amount of time to walk through the gorge.

The Gorge

You walk along the gorge on wooden walkways beautifully embedded in nature. The view is simply breathtaking, the roar of the water deafening. Just stop and enjoy the power of nature. (In the evening you'll be stuck in traffic anyway) After about 20 minutes you'll reach the end of the gorge and go through an iron gate to the exit. If you want, you can also visit the Klammsee which is located directly above the waterfall. On nice summer days it offers a pleasant change.
