The Sigmund Thun Gorge at Kaprun is an impressive, 320-meter-long gorge through which the Kapruner Ache river has carved its way over millennia. Massive rock formations, roaring waterfalls, and well-maintained wooden walkways make a visit a special natural experience – day and night alike. The path through the gorge leads directly above the water and offers spectacular views of the power of nature.
From Zell am See, follow the B168 towards Kaprun. Once in Kaprun, take the Kesselfallstraße towards the Kaprun-Hauptstufe power plant. Parking lots 1 and 2 are located there, very close to the entrance to the Sigmund Thun Gorge. Parking is free.
Regional bus line 660 connects Zell am See with Kaprun. Get off at the stop Tauernplatz From there, you can reach the entrance to the gorge in about 10–15 minutes on foot.
During the day, the gorge can be crossed comfortably in about 20–30 minutes. It's often quiet, especially in the morning—ideal for enjoying the scenery in complete tranquility. The wooden walkways built into the rocks lead along the wildly rushing Kapruner Ache River. The thundering water, the steep walls, and the interplay of light and shadow make this trail a true nature experience.
A personal tip: If you get there early, you'll have the gorge almost to yourself. We were there first thing in the morning – not a soul in sight, just the roar of the water. The entrance fee was free thanks to Zell am See/Kaprun map free – a saving of around 10 €.
A real highlight are the guided night hikes, which take place every Friday in the summer starting at around 8:30 p.m. The entire gorge is mystically illuminated, the water seems to roar even louder in the dark, and the atmosphere is unique. However, the night tour is very popular – on our visit, the parking lot was already full, and we waited a good 25 minutes at the ticket office. Admission costs around €10; discounts with the Kaprun Card do not apply.
Despite the wait, the nighttime passage is a very special experience. You move slowly through the gorge, stopping often—sometimes voluntarily, sometimes because of the crowds—and can take in the play of light and the sounds of nature.
After the last iron gate, the landscape opens up – and you find yourself at the idyllic Klammsee lake. It lies above the waterfall and is a perfect place to linger, especially on warm days. Around the lake, there are play areas for children, seating, and picnic areas. Those visiting the gorge during the day can relax here or add a short walk around the lake.
