The Imperial Apartments: A glimpse into life at the imperial court

After the Sisi Museum we continue to the Imperial Apartments, which consist of 19 authentically furnished rooms. They were once the work, living and representation rooms of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth and impressively convey the splendor, but also the everyday life of court life in the 19th century.

The most important rooms include:

  • Study of Emperor Franz Joseph: This is where the emperor began his work every day at 5 a.m. The simple desk and plain furniture reflect his discipline and work ethic.
  • Audience Room: In this room the emperor received numerous guests every day – from ministers to ordinary subjects.
  • Bedroom of the Imperial CoupleSeparate beds testify to the couple's chilly relationship. Sisi's fitness equipment, such as rings and a horizontal bar, is also on display here – she exercised daily.
  • Toilet and dressing room: This clearly demonstrates how elaborate Sisi's daily care and styling were. The large dressing table gives an idea of how much time she devoted to her beauty routine.
  • Living room and dining room: Private meals took place in these magnificently furnished rooms – the large state banquets, however, were held in the Ceremonial Hall.

The entire furnishing of the apartments is in Biedermeier style and was largely reconstructed based on historical models. Many of the furniture and artwork are originals.

An impressive double exhibition in the heart of the Hofburg

The Sisi Museum and the Imperial Apartments together create a harmonious overall picture of the era of the Austrian Empire. While the museum teaches you about Sisi's world of thought, her thirst for freedom, her peculiarities, and her tragic story, the Imperial Apartments reveal the court life and etiquette of the time.

Particularly exciting is the contrast between the rebellious personality of Sisi and the disciplined, tradition-conscious Emperor Franz Joseph – this is palpable in the exhibition in a subtle but impressive way.
