St. Gilgen is a charming community in the Salzburg part of the Salzkammergut and is one of the three surrounding villages of Lake Wolfgang, next to Strobl and St. WolfgangThe place is often called "Mozart Village", even though Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself never stayed here. His mother and sisters, however, lived here, and the Mozart House is a reminder of their time. Since 2008, there has been an exhibition showing personal items and letters that provide insights into family life.
A popular attraction is the lake promenade, where several Wolfgangsee ships dock. Monuments to famous people such as Nobel Prize winner Karl von Frisch and former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl can also be found here.
Particularly impressive is the parish church of St. Aegydius, which is located directly above Mozartplatz. Mozart's mother was baptized in this church, and his grandparents and sister were married here.
