St. Gilgen: Experience Mozart's legacy and the Zwölferhorn

St. Gilgen is idyllically situated on Lake Wolfgang and combines culture with nature. Visit the Mozart House, stroll along the lake promenade and discover the local mountain, the Zwölferhorn, which offers hiking in summer and skiing fun in winter.

Short info:

  • Where is the place? On the western side of the Wolfgangsee
  • What is there to see here? The Mozart House (Mother's House)
  • Other highlights? The local mountain, the Zwölferhorn. In summer it is the starting point for many hikes, in winter there are several ski slopes.
  • Do ships dock in St. Wolfgang? Yes, here you can find the timetables.

St. Gilgen is a charming community in the Salzburg part of the Salzkammergut and is one of the three surrounding villages of Lake Wolfgang, next to Strobl and St. WolfgangThe place is often called "Mozart Village", even though Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself never stayed here. His mother and sisters, however, lived here, and the Mozart House is a reminder of their time. Since 2008, there has been an exhibition showing personal items and letters that provide insights into family life.

A popular attraction is the lake promenade, where several Wolfgangsee ships dock. Monuments to famous people such as Nobel Prize winner Karl von Frisch and former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl can also be found here.

Particularly impressive is the parish church of St. Aegydius, which is located directly above Mozartplatz. Mozart's mother was baptized in this church, and his grandparents and sister were married here.

For nature lovers, St. Gilgen offers the perfect starting point: the cable car to the ZwölferhornThe panoramic mountain is ideal for hiking in summer and a popular ski area in winter. The view from the top is breathtaking and invites you to explore the surrounding mountains.
