Tannheimer Valley – Tyrolean natural idyll in the Allgäu Alps

The Tannheimer Valley is located in northwest Tyrol near the German border and is one of Austria's most popular high mountain valleys. Situated at approximately 1,100 meters above sea level, it encompasses the villages of Tannheim, Grän-Haldensee, Nesselwängle, Zöblen, Schattwald, and Jungholz. Summer in the Tannheimer Valley is characterized by a particularly diverse range of activities for hikers, cyclists, swimmers, and families. Over 300 km of marked hiking trails lead through the gentle low mountain landscape, along sunny high-altitude paths, to romantic lakes, or up to panoramic peaks. Many of the trails start directly in the villages, eliminating long journeys.

The family-friendly hike to the Vilsalpsee, a protected natural gem at the end of the valley. The path is accessible with strollers, or a shuttle bus runs. Visitors to the lake can expect impressive scenery, rare bird species, and tranquility.

A highlight is the ascent with the Neunerköpflebahn from Tannheim. Once at the top, the Alpine Flower Trail An easy panoramic trail with botanical signage – ideal for families. More challenging tours continue towards the Landsberger Hut or the Gappenfeld Saddle.

Cycling and swimming in the Tannheimer Valley

Cross-country skiing and winter hiking

Cross-country skiers benefit from one of Tyrol's best trail networks: 140 km of classic and freestyle trails run through the entire valley.
