The UNO City in Vienna is one of the four official headquarters of the United Nations worldwide. The Vienna International Centre (VIC) offers exciting tours where visitors learn more about global issues such as peace, human rights, and sustainable development. The visit is particularly suitable for those interested in international politics, educational institutions, and school classes.
The tours are open to the public and highly informative. They provide insight into the workings of the UN and the responsibilities of the Vienna-based organizations. Advance registration is required.
Opened in 1979, UNO City houses approximately 5,000 employees from over 120 countries. Numerous international organizations are located here, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), UNIDO, and UNODC. Together, they work on issues such as security, development, human rights, and the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
Each tour is accompanied by a multilingual guide. The content can be individually tailored to the group's prior knowledge and interests. Visitors receive an introduction to the United Nations and the work of the Vienna-based units of the UN family.
Part of the tour usually includes a visit to a conference room where international negotiations take place. We were particularly impressed by the artwork on display, including an original by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. A highlight—especially for children—is a real moon rock on loan from NASA.
The architecture and history of the building complex will also be discussed. Content and route may vary for organizational reasons, so it is recommended that you communicate any topic preferences at the beginning of the tour.
Tour brochure & souvenirs
A 32-page, color brochure summarizing the key points is available for purchase along with the tour. A small selection of books and souvenirs from the UN Bookshop can also be added to your online booking and picked up on-site.
The organizations represented in Vienna are committed to peace, security, and sustainable development. These include measures against drug trafficking and terrorism, programs to promote industry in developing countries, space projects, and nuclear weapons control. The UNO City is thus a place where people are actively working toward a safer and more just world.
Strict security regulations apply to entry to the UNO City. An original official photo ID is required; copies or digital versions are not accepted. Additionally, you must pass through an airport-style security check. Large bags are not permitted, and there is no left-luggage facility.
Tip: Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the tour begins, as the security check takes some time.
The UNO City is closed on weekends and UN holidays. In 2025, August 15 and the period from December 22 to January 2 are also excluded.
