Architecture and History

The Votive Church was built after the assassination attempt on Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1853 as a token of gratitude for his rescue. The foundation stone was laid in 1856, and it was ceremoniously consecrated in 1879. It was designed by the then 26-year-old architect Heinrich von Ferstel, who was inspired by 13th-century French cathedral Gothic.

The façade features two 99-meter-high towers, ornate tracery windows, and a richly decorated portal. The interior is designed as a three-aisled basilica with a transept and impresses with delicate cross-ribbed vaults supported by tall columns.

A special highlight are the ornate stained glass windows. Originally, 78 windows adorned the church, many of them designed by renowned artists such as Joseph von Führich and Edward von Steinle. Some windows were destroyed during World War II, but many original masterpieces have survived.

The high altar is another of the church's highlights. Designed by the sculptor Joseph Gasser, it combines Gothic and Neo-Gothic stylistic elements. The ciborium above the altar is made of red granite and flanked by angel figures.

The organ in the gallery above the main portal is also one of the most important of its kind. Built in 1878 by the EF Walcker organ builder, it has 61 stops. Its restored original version makes it one of the most important historic organs in the world.

Light of Creation

A modern highlight in the Votivkirche is the light installation "Light of Creation." This impressive multimedia show tells the story of creation in six acts through projections, light animations, and specially composed music. The entire nave is transformed into a breathtaking visual experience that captivates everyone.

The light show lasts approximately 30 minutes and takes place on selected evenings. Tickets should be reserved online in advance. Please note that the church is not air-conditioned and temperatures can fluctuate greatly depending on the season. Children under 6 years of age are not permitted to attend the show.

Museum in the Votive Church

Since its reopening in October 2021, the Votive Church has housed a permanent exhibition of sacred works of art. The museum is located in the raised oratory on the first floor and is accessible via a spiral staircase (not wheelchair accessible). The exhibition features valuable liturgical objects, magnificent banners, and design drawings for the church's original stained glass windows.

A special highlight is the "Antwerp Passion Altar" from around 1500, a late Gothic carving with original polychromy. This exceptional rarity is one of the few surviving works of art of its kind.

The exhibition was restored in cooperation with the University of Applied Arts Vienna and offers a unique view of the nave and the high altar.

From the museum you also have a very nice view of the church from above, although unfortunately you are not allowed to go up to the two small terraces.

We also found it exciting that we were the only visitors and the door had to be opened especially for us 🙂

Votive Park

Directly in front of the Votivkirche is the Votive Park, a popular green space in the heart of the city. Especially among students at the nearby University of Vienna, the park is a popular meeting place during the warmer months – for picnics, studying, or relaxing between lectures. Young people also enjoy using the park for a short break in the green.

Tip: From the end of March to the beginning of April, magnificent Magnolia trees, which bathe the park in an impressive play of pink and white – a wonderful photo opportunity!

Music for Christmas

Gospel music is as much a part of the Christmas season as the scent of cinnamon and gingerbread. The concerts at the Votivkirche have long been an integral part of the Advent season and offer an unforgettable experience with rousing rhythms, powerful voices, and moving melodies. Whether the energetic sounds of Stella Jones & The American Christmas Gospel or the soulful interpretations of Monika Ballwein – these special evenings musically revive the anticipation of Christmas. In the impressive atmosphere of the Votivkirche, the artists' voices unfold to their full effect and provide moments of goosebumps. A must for all those who love gospel and want to get into the festive spirit!
