The Zillergrund reservoir is part of the Zillertal power plant network and is used to generate electricity. The dam itself is a technical masterpiece and impresses with its height of 186 meters. At the same time, the reservoir is an important water reservoir that supplies the region with sustainable energy.

In addition to its technical importance, the reservoir offers a unique landscape that is particularly popular with hikers and mountain lovers. The mountains surrounding the reservoir rise steeply into the sky, and the contrast between the bright blue water and the rocky peaks creates a scene that seems almost surreal.

Hiking around the Zillergrund reservoir

Around the Zillergrund reservoir There are numerous hiking trails, ranging from easy walks to more challenging mountain tours. A special highlight is the hike into the area affectionately known as “Little Tibet” This name refers to the remote, almost mystical landscape, which is characterized by the barren mountains and the deep blue water of the reservoir. Here you can enjoy nature in complete peace and be fascinated by the silence of the surroundings.

One of the most popular tours is the hike to Plauener Hütte at an altitude of 2,364 meters. The path leads along the shore of the reservoir and offers you fantastic views of the turquoise water and the surrounding mountain peaks. The hike to the Plauener Hut is of moderate difficulty and takes about 3 to 4 hours. The hut offers an opportunity to stop for a break and is a good starting point for other mountain tours in the area.

For less experienced hikers there is the circular route around the Zillergrund reservoir, which is particularly suitable for families and nature lovers. The path is easy to manage and offers you breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding landscape. Along the circular route you will find several rest areas that are ideal for a break or a picnic.

In addition to the hike to the Plauener Hütte, there are numerous other hiking options around the Zillergrund reservoir. A popular tour leads to the Zillergründl reservoir viewpoint, from where you can enjoy an incomparable view of the dam and the entire lake. The climb is of medium difficulty and takes about 2 hours.

For experienced mountaineers, the tour to Zillerplattenspitze which is at an altitude of 2,998 meters. This demanding tour requires surefootedness and stamina, but offers unforgettable panoramic views of the Zillertal Alps.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit the Zillergrund reservoir is from spring to autumn. In summer, the lake shows its characteristic turquoise color and the surrounding mountains invite you to go on long hikes. Autumn transforms the region into a colorful landscape that is ideal for hiking and enjoying nature.

In winter, the Zillergrund reservoir is not accessible because the roads may be closed, but the Zillertal offers numerous worthwhile activities even in the cold season.
