The Literature Museum of the Austrian National Library is a real treasure for anyone interested in literature and culture. Located in the heart of Vienna, in a historic building on Josefsplatz, it offers an insight into the rich history of Austrian literature. It was opened in April 2017.
The museum extends over three floors and offers a variety of exhibitions and events.
On the first and second floor you will find a permanent exhibition on Austrian literary history since the late 18th century. Here you can discover texts by Johann Nestroy, Franz Kafka, Ilse Aichinger, Ingeborg Bachmann, Thomas Bernhard or Friederike Mayröcker. There are also amazing objects such as Peter Handke’s walking stick or a uniform worn by Arthur Schnitzler’s “Leutnant Gustl”.
On the 2nd floor you will also find Franz Grillparzer’s study, which has been preserved true to the original and gives an insight into the author’s everyday work and writing. “Grillparzer proved that you can really suffer in Vienna,” said Franz Kafka in a 1914 letter to his girlfriend Grete Bloch.
On the 3rd floor you will find changing special exhibitions. During our visit there was a homage to Ingeborg Bachmann, one of the most important writers of the 20th century.

It’s a place to get inspiration and gather new ideas. Anyone interested in literature and culture should definitely pay a visit to the museum.
