General
While the Viennese Prater is known far beyond the national borders, mostly only Viennese know the traditional Bohemian Prater. It all began more than 100 years ago, when in 1884 20 restaurants and numerous showmen settled in the Laa Forest, which formed the basis of the small Prater and was soon given the name “Bohemian Prater” because of the visitors. It soon became the most important place of entertainment for the people of Favoritner and Simmering.
Today the small amusement park has an area of approx. 5000 m². The center of the Bohemian Prater is the event center Tivoli. The Bohemian Prater is particularly popular with young families.
As in the Viennese Prater, you do not have to pay an entrance fee here. Only the individual trips with the partly ancient companions cost admission. This can vary greatly, as some operators manage several attractions, others only individual ones. The respective tokens are only ever valid for these attractions. The more you buy, the cheaper they get.
You have to pay around €3 per trip. So it’s a lot cheaper here than in the Prater, but not as spectacular. We recommend the Bohemian Prater for kindergarten to elementary school children. Everyone else will rather get bored here. On the other hand, things are much more relaxed here. We went with our 3 year old who just couldn’t get enough. But parents and grandparents will enjoy the nostalgic rides.
The attractions
- As in the large Prater, there is also a Ferris wheel in the Bohemian Prater. It was built in 1988, but only has a diameter of 21 meters, has 14 gondolas and is operated by the Reinhardt showman operation. A special feature of this Ferris wheel is that its hub rests on a single support structure.
- There is an autodrome for the very young as well as for teenagers and adults.
- Children’s ghost train
- Several carousels (lollipop, plane, fairy tale carousel, vehicles, Ufo Force, disco autodrome…). Here is also the oldest carousel in Europe. When it opened in 1890, Emperor Franz Joseph is said to have been the guest of honour. The oldest wooden horse carousel in Europe is now listed as a monument. Before a motor was installed, the drive was done by hand by staff in the basement of the carousel.
