In the 13th century, Tulln was still surrounded by city fortifications. Not much is left of the wall, as most of it was demolished in 1860. But even today there is still a beautifully preserved piece with a city tower and a moat in front of it.
The City Tower, built in 1550, is a round tower that protected the south-west corner of the city walls. The city wall of that time was up to 5m high and 1.8m wide. In front of this wall was the “Zwinger”, a narrow corridor and in front of this the Zwinger wall, almost 1 meter wide and only 2 meters high; in front of it lay the city moat and city wall.
Originally, Tulln was surrounded by a rectangular wall 600 meters long and 420 meters. At the corners there were towers or bastion-like fortifications, in the middle of the walls four gates pointing to the four cardinal points.
