The Globes and Esperanto Museum of the Austrian National Library is a true treasure for all those interested in geography and languages. The world’s only museum of its kind offers a unique collection of globes and maps, as well as an extensive selection of books and magazines dealing with the international language Esperanto. It is located in the magnificent ambiance of Palais Mollard. The exhibition area comprises more than 250 exhibits – including exclusive terrestrial and celestial globes, moon and planet globes, as well as several astronomical instruments.
The collection of globes and maps includes a great variety of exhibits from different times and cultures. The oldest objects date back to the 16th century and show the world as it was known at that time. Particularly impressive are the globes from the 18th century, which were made in elaborate handicraft and represent a true work of art.
But not only the globes and maps are fascinating, also the Esperanto Museum offers a unique collection. Esperanto is a language invented by the Polish ophthalmologist Ludwik Zamenhof in 1887, which aims to enable international communication without language barriers. The exhibition in the museum shows the history of this language and offers an extensive collection of books, magazines, and other materials dealing with Esperanto.
The museum also regularly offers guided tours, where you can dive even deeper into the history of globes and Esperanto. A special recommendation is the tour “The World in Pocket Format”, where you can visit a unique collection of miniature globes.
