In the middle of the Hohe Tauern lies one of the most imposing buildings of the post-war period. The Kaprun high mountain reservoirs with their two reservoirs, Wasserfallboden and Mooserboden, at around 2,040 meters above sea level.
From Kaprun, you drive about 12 minutes to the end of the street. There is a free parking garage with ten floors. There is no other way to get to the reservoir. A little tip: just park upstairs, because the exit and the ticket office are upstairs.
Admission to the reservoir is € 25 for, including the bus ride (ascent and descent). You hardly have any other choice, as the hike to the reservoir takes 4 hours. Make sure you get a Kaprun Summer Card, which is often free when you stay overnight. With this entry to the reservoir is also free.
The bus takes about 15 minutes to get to the top. The terminus is directly at the dam of the upper Mooserboden reservoir. Numerous paths lead from here, for example one can walk along the dam wall. You should definitely then climb the hill between the two dams, as you have an excellent view of both reservoirs from up here.
There is also the opportunity to take a tour of the dam. After four days of continuous rain in Bühlertal, however, we wanted to enjoy the beautiful weather and decided to forego this tour.
Hike from the upper to the lower reservoir:
Instead, we decided to hike from the upper reservoir to the lower reservoir, the Wasserfallboden reservoir. The way to do this leads away from the herbal nature trail. We started our hike at 1:30 p.m. The path is manageable for everyone, it leads steadily down the narrow path.
Almost 40 minutes later we arrived at our destination, the Ebmattenhütte-Fürthermoaralm. If you have time, you should definitely stop here: the surroundings and landscape are simply fantastic, the hut is idyllically located and offers everything for a more pleasant rest.
The apple strudel and the homemade butter milk are excellent and highly recommended. The Kaiserschmarrn also looks delicious, but unfortunately we only saw it at our table neighbors.
You can fill up your drinking bottle here with fresh mountain water from the well. There is a beautifully situated playground for children. The buses leave right outside the door. In our opinion, the timetable is unfortunately badly organized. We are lucky and get a bus straight away, but we heard from others that they had been waiting for 1 hour. The drive down also takes much longer because the lane is single and we had to wait again and again because of oncoming traffic. So it took us almost 45 minutes down.
Nevertheless, one can definitely recommend the reservoirs in Kaprun. You can have a wonderful time here, especially when the weather is nice.
