General
The Congress Bath (also colloquially known as “Kongerl”) is a public swimming pool located in the 16th district of Vienna, Ottakring, and is situated right next to the Congress Park. It was opened in 1932 and is one of the oldest and most popular outdoor pools in Vienna. Despite the building’s reminders of past decades, it in no way diminishes the swimming enjoyment of the current generation. The pool is set in a park-like environment and offers a variety of activities for both young and old.
The Congress Bath covers an area of around 60,000 square meters and features a large swimming pool, a children’s pool, a splash pool, a water slide, a volleyball court, a table tennis area, a mini golf course, and a play meadow. Additionally, there is a café-restaurant, lifeguards on duty, and a first aid station.
Getting There
There are some parking spaces directly on Julius-Meinl-Gasse and in the surrounding area. However, we recommend arriving by tram line 43 or S-Bahn S-45, Hernals station.
What Does the Congress Bath Offer?
The pool is well-structured and offers a clear separation between the adventure areas and the toddler area.
Action can be found in the sports pool as well as the adventure pool, which, of course, features a long slide for extra fun. Behind it is a large, albeit treeless sunbathing area.
For the littlest visitors, there’s a secluded area in the rear part of the pool, which doesn’t lack in attractiveness. Here, there’s a splash pool with a whirlpool and, notably comfortable, a wide and shallow water entry. What bothers us a bit is the fact that the children’s pool lacks a shaded area, leaving the kids exposed to direct sunlight.
However, the Congress Bath compensates for this with an expansive sunbathing area directly behind, providing ample shade from the trees.
The children’s playground, while secured by soft rubber flooring, is also in full sun. Only the sandbox is covered and offers the little guests a shaded play area.
