How long does it take to walk around Lake Leopoldstein? For the 4km long route you need about 45 minutes without rest
After our visit to the Erzberg adventure, we drove straight to this beautiful lake, which also appears in the Erzberg saga of Aquarius. Both stops can therefore be easily combined in one day as they are only a few minutes apart by car.
The Leopoldsteiner See in general
It lies at 628 m above sea level at the foot of the sea wall in the western Hochschwab group, embedded in the mountains. The lake is 1400 meters long and 370 meters wide, its deepest point is 31 m. The lake is completely undeveloped and natural. There is only one small inn by the car park (the Leopoldsteinerseestüberl) and another at the Seestüberl on the eastern shore of the lake.
On sunny days, the water surface shimmers emerald green. Speaking of the sun: in summer you can swim in the lake near the natural bathing beach, but the temperature does not exceed 20°, since the lake is fed purely by spring water from the surrounding mountains.
In summer you can rent electric pedal boats and rowing boats daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For climbing fans there are several via ferratas with different levels of difficulty.
Walk around Lake Leopoldstein
We can only recommend this walk to everyone. It is very easy to walk, mostly flat, but not stroller or wheelchair accessible.
We walked counterclockwise along the lake. Again and again you have views of the crystal clear water. After about 20 minutes you will reach the Seestüberl on the eastern shore of the lake (the snack station of the Leopoldsteinerseestüberl at the parking lot). There is not much choice here, but you can get drinks, ice cream, sandwiches, sausages and very tasty pastries. A stop is definitely worth it, because the view is simply fantastic.
The path now continues narrower through the forest along the lake. You come across a few roots, every now and then it goes up and down over small hills. The view remains fantastically beautiful. If you didn’t take a break, you’ll be back after about 45 minutes.
If you want, you can treat yourself to a refreshment in the Leopoldsteiner See Stüberl. There are various soups and home cooking such as Steierkasnock’n, roasted dumplings, schnitzel, Leopoldsteinersee toast with tender pieces of loin. But the flagship is the lake trout fried with parsley potatoes.
The Leopoldsteiner See is definitely worth a visit!
