The Naschmarkt
The Naschmarkt is the largest and probably the most famous market in Vienna. It begins on the city center side at the Getreidemarkt (Secession) and extends west to the subway station Kettenbrückengasse. The market is open-air, with around 120 market stalls, restaurants and bars offering fresh food and specialties from around the world. Most products come from Austria, ex-Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, East Asia, Japan and China. Its flair is reminiscent of an oriental bazaar.
At the stalls you will find fruit, vegetables, spices, fish, meat, cheese, pastries and more.
However, the market has not been cheap for a long time, probably because it is also very popular with tourists. Many a visitor has already been ripped off here – so beware of the prices and weight information. 100g often seems cheap, but counted per kilo you may experience a surprise…
Some restaurants have now also established themselves as well-attended scene meeting points. But these are not cheap either. Accordingly, the area around the market is becoming more and more popular with restaurant owners.
Flea market
The flea market is located directly adjacent to the Naschmarkt, when leaving the center. The market is every Saturday, selling antiques, clothing, artwork, household items, used books, signs and records. Since the stand tenants are private individuals, you will also find a lot of junk and sometimes scrap. However, bargains with high-quality old goods or antique furniture are also possible at the flea market.
