General information about the Meerauge
The Meerauge, a jewel in the southern Carinthian Alps, attracts nature enthusiasts and photographers every year who want to capture its pristine beauty. The lake is known for its exceptionally clear, emerald green water, which is given a picturesque backdrop by the surrounding forests and mountains. The distinctive turquoise color of the water is caused by algae. The formation of the Meerauge can be traced back to the last ice age (70,000 to 10,000 years ago), the so-called Würm Ice Age. It takes 2 minutes to walk around the lake. Nevertheless, we spent half an hour there because the water was just so beautiful to look at.
Exploration and activities at the Meerauge
The Bodental offers numerous hiking trails of varying difficulty that lead past the Meerauge or start near it. The trails are well suited to families and offer fantastic views of the surrounding mountain landscape. In addition to hiking, visitors can also explore the area's rich flora and fauna and, with a little luck, spot rare animal species such as the Alpine salamander.
