St. Wolfgang is located in the Upper Austrian part of the Salzkammergut and is criss-crossed by picturesque alleys and historic squares. The town is one of the three surrounding communities of the Wolfgangsee (next to Strobl and St.Gilgen).
The oldest streets and squares in St. Wolfgang are located in the Stöckl and Zipf, many of which date back to the Wilhelminian era. Here, holidaymakers will find several nice little shops, cafes, bakeries and souvenir shops. Incidentally, the center is a pedestrian zone, so you can stroll undisturbed.
The place is famous for its Pilgrimage Church, whose foundation dates back to a legend in 976. It can be visited free of charge. Summer: from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., winter: from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
No less well-known is the Weiße Rößl, where guests have been accommodated in the property below the pilgrimage church of St. Wolfgang for over 500 years. It has served as a backdrop for numerous films.
Another highlight is the Schafberg railway, the steepest steam rack railway in Austria. Since 1893, it has travelled up the 1,783-metre-high Schafberg in 35 minutes. The nostalgic rack steam locomotives are among the oldest in the world (built in 1893, 1894). Everyone should take a trip to the summit at least once. There is a fantastic view from the top.
Ships in St. Wolfgang: On Lake Wolfgangsee, the six ships of the Wolfgangseeschifffahrt operate several times a day between the seven ship stations around the lake. Here you can find the Timetables.
We can highly recommend the Bürglstein Panorama Trail, which is Strobl after St Wolfgang leads!
We ate very well at Paul the Innkeeper.
