St. Wolfgang is located in the Upper Austrian part of the Salzkammergut and is criss-crossed by picturesque alleys and historic squares. The place is one of the three communities surrounding Lake Wolfgang (next to Strobl and St.Gilgen).
Stöckl and Zipf are the oldest streets and squares in St.Wolfgang, many of which date back to the early days. Here the vacationer will find several nice little shops, cafes, bakeries and souvenir shops. By the way, the center is a pedestrian zone, so you can stroll around undisturbed.
The place is famous for its pilgrimage church, the foundation of which goes back to a legend in 976. It can be visited for free. Summer: from 08:00 to 18:00, winter: from 08:00 to 16:00.
The Weisses Rößl is no less well-known, as guests have been accommodated in the property below the pilgrimage church of St. Wolfgang for over 500 years. It has served as a backdrop for numerous films.
Another highlight is the Schafbergbahn, the steepest steam cog railway in Austria. Since 1893, it has been taking 35 minutes to the 1,783 meter high Schafberg. The nostalgic cogwheel steam locomotives are among the oldest in the world (built in 1893 and 1894). Everyone should have made a trip to the summit at least once. From the top you have a great view.
Ships in St. Wolfgang: On the Wolfgangsee, the six ships of the Wolfgangseeschifffahrt operate several times a day between the seven ship stations around the lake. You can find the timetables here.
We can highly recommend the Bürglstein Panoramaweg, which leads from Strobl to St. Wolfgang!
We ate very well at Paul der Wirt.
