The butterfly house in Vienna could hardly be more prominent. You can find it right next to the Hofburg, where Emperor Franz Josef I once resided with his wife Sissi. You can still find the Federal President here today. The Burggarten, which has been freely accessible to everyone since 1919, is located directly in front of the butterfly house.
The 128m long palm house in the Burggarten can be seen from afar and, in addition to the butterfly house, also houses a beautiful coffee house that you should definitely visit.
As soon as you enter the palm house you can feel the pleasant tropical climate of 26°C and 80% humidity. In winter it is therefore advisable to hang up the jacket in the cloakroom beforehand. After paying the entrance fee, you can move around the house freely.
The tour runs counterclockwise in the Palm House. Again and again beautiful butterflies flutter past. Many can be seen nibbling on natural nectar (such as hibiscus, lantana or leadwort) or at the artificial feeding stations (honey is sprayed in here). Elsewhere you will always find fruit bowls. Each butterfly species has its own food plant and lays its eggs exclusively on this plant species. Banana trees, passion flowers and silk plants can also be found in the butterfly house.
All year round you can admire about 40 different different species of butterflies and a total of around 500 live and free-flying butterflies that come from tropical countries such as Costa Rica, Suriname, Thailand or the Philippines. By the way, these are NOT captured. There are also no endangered species on display or sold to collectors.
The tropical plants and artificially created waterfalls are intended to imitate a habitat that is as natural as possible, which we think works relatively well. A particularly beautiful view is from a small wooden bridge.
Theoretically you could walk the lap in 5 minutes, but who wants that. After all, one came to observe and photograph the butterflies. In total, you should calculate half an hour to 1 hour for the visit.
