The zoo in Wels is the oldest in Upper Austria, on 28,000 m² it is home to around 90 animal species with a total of 600 animals. These come from almost every continent (Eurasia, Europe, Asia, India, South America, New Zealand).
However, one should not imagine big cats or other wild animals here. Here are more exotic and native bird species, such as cranes, white storks, ducks and birds of prey. The native animal species include two lynxes, deer, turtles and pot-bellied pigs.
Founded in 1930, the zoo also has a large number of primates (e.g. bearded monkeys, little pygmy marmosets and katas), and in 2012 a new monkey house was built for them.
Sometimes there are feed dispensers for the animals in front of the enclosures. A cup filling for the animals, which children like to eat out of their hands, costs €1.
The zoo is also particularly suitable for families with children in other respects, as there is plenty of space to run around and there is also a very large children’s playground. Parents can watch their children play from the buffet. The beautifully landscaped zoo is definitely worth a visit.
