Brief information:
- Where is the zoo located? In Rosegg, at the western end of the Wörthersee, near Velden
- How much is the entrance fee? Children € 6, adults € 10. You can find all prices here.
- When is it open? Spring autumn. There is a break in winter. You can find the opening times here.
- Is it worth the visit? The zoo is an experience especially with children. The park is beautifully laid out.
You shouldn’t imagine a zoo under this animal park. Exotic animals are almost completely absent here, apart from a few kangaroos. Nevertheless, Rosegg is the largest zoo in the Austrian state of Carinthia. The zoo, which initially served as a princely hunting ground, was founded by Peter Ritter von Bohr, who from 1830 had the zoo wall built around the wooded slopes of a hilltop castle. This wall is still the boundary of the zoo today.
Around 400 animals from 35 species live in the park, spread over a large deer meadow, an exotic and domestic animal area and the historic zoo around the wooded mountain.
You can go for a wonderful walk here and sometimes watch game such as ibex, peacock or deer up close in the open-air enclosure.
The circular route leads through a beautiful forest and past a lake. Even if you don’t come across that many animals, the hike is worth the visit.
Incidentally, the way up to the castle ruins is not suitable for prams, the rest is relatively easy to master.
The round ends (at the entrance) at a petting zoo, a special highlight for children. Donkeys, llamas, goats, rabbits, kangaroos and more can be fed here. Of course there is also a playground and a small buffet here.
